Warning: spoilers ahead for The Diplomat season 2.The Diplomat season three could feature a surprising villain, played by an actor who has done surprisingly little thus far. Although there were several small players in The Diplomat season 2 cast, this particular figure has a strong connection to Keri Russell’s Kate Wylerand their role so far suggests that they could become much more prominent in The Diplomat season 3 story. If the end of The Diplomat season two is any indication, the future of Netflix’s political drama looks very exciting.
Kate’s vice-presidential aspirations took a major blow in The Diplomat Season 2, Episode 6, “Dreadnought.” While newly ascended Grace Penn (Allison Janney) could still name Kate as her second-in-command, it would be more of a twisted power move than anything else. As such, It’s still unclear what showrunner Debora Cahn has in store for the future of Russell’s character. However, Cahn may have hidden clues to a major twist in the first two seasons.
Laurel Lefkow as Carole Lengetti has done almost nothing in the diplomat so far
Carole served as Kate’s VERY occasional confidant
Carole Lengetti appeared in only two episodes of The Diplomat so far – one in each of the available seasons. Laurel Lefkow’s character appears to have a relatively close friendship with Kate due to their shared professional history. The show didn’t go into much detail about their dynamic, but the conversations they had sparked an immense level of trust and respect for each other. Briefly, Carole could be much more important in The Diplomat season 3 than many might expect.
After debuting in The Diplomat season 1, episode 2, ‘Don’t Call it a Kidnapping,’ Carole doesn’t return until The Diplomat season 2 finale, when she goes to stay with Kate at Winfield House. It’s hard to believe that Carole is as much of a secondary character as she initially seemsespecially with Kate inviting her to be a guest at her UK residence. As such, it’s not an unreasonable assumption that Lefkow’s workload will increase in the next batch of episodes.
What Could Be Carole’s Biggest Role in The Diplomat Season 3
Carole may not be the ally she appears to be (at least, not to Kate)
Showrunner Debora Cahn continues to tease the possibility of Kate still becoming vice president in The Diplomat season 3. In this case, Russell’s character will need to rely on the people she trusts more than ever, especially under the leadership of President Penn. Therefore, Carole may become one of the few people Kate can trust and ask for advice – especially with how much of a loose canon Rufus Sewell’s Hal Wyler can be.
Alternatively, It could be that Carole has been in Grace Penn’s back pocket the whole timewhich would be an incredibly painful turn of events for Kate. It’s no doubt a coincidence that Lefkow’s character appeared just as Kate began to suspect that something was more than a little wrong with what was happening with the attack on HMS Courageous. Therefore, the possibility remains that Carole was sent by Grace to keep an eye on Kate during the investigation that took up most of her time. The Diplomatstory so far.
