A pretty major MCU cameo was left out of the final cut of Deadpool & WolverineAnd although it is hard to believe, it is probably justified. Two months after its release, the many cameos inside Deadpool & Wolverine They’re still a hot topic, with appearances from the likes of Henry Cavill and Channing Tatum spurring calls for their MCU return. They’re joined by Marvel heroes from yesteryear, including Jennifer Garner’s Elektra, Wesley Snipes’ Blade and Chris Evans’ Human Torch, all of whom helped cement their legendary status in the MCU.
These prominent cameos may have helped define the ethos of Deadpool & Wolverine Like a love letter to the genre — and Fox’s X-Men movies in particular — but they only scratch the surface. A litany of lesser-known cameos were also included in the final cut, being so stuffed that Harry Holland’s cameo as a Deadpool variant supposedly even slipped by Ryan Reynolds. Nevertheless, a much more famous actor was also supposed to appear in a secret cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine – and I’m honestly shocked that he didn’t make it.
Rob McElhenney’s Deadpool and Wolverine cameo was cut from the final movie
Rob McElhenney was supposed to portray a TVA agent
Rob McElhenney was supposed to attend Deadpool & WolverineBut his scene never made it past the cutting room floor. McElhenney is best known for portraying Mac In It’s always sunny in PhiladelphiaAnd has significant star power off the back of that alone. He is also known for co-owning the Welsh football club, Wrexham FC, with Reynolds; Partners’ journey has been featured in the popular Disney+ docuseries, Welcome to Wrexham. The relationship between the two actors apparently evolved into an offer for McElhenney to cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine – to which he was obliged.
This would lead to McElhenney flying to London to film these Short sequence in which he would have appeared as a fully masked TVA agent. Additional details about his scene are widely unclear, as it was ultimately cut from the movie, despite McElhenney’s efforts to film the sequence and the fact that he may have added to a list of notable appearances in Deadpool & Wolverine. As for why his scene was cut, Reynolds recently made sure to share his regret on what he referred to as a “Kill your darling” Moment.
Why Rob McElhenney’s Deadpool and Wolverine cameo was cut from the MCU movie
Ryan Reynolds explains the painful decision to cut McElhenney’s cameo
In a post shared by InstagramReynolds lamented the tough decision to cut McElhenney’s cameo in the later stages of production while sharing a picture of McElhenney in his TVA costume. His post admits that the sequence “Is not working the way [they had] Originally constructed it“ suggesting that it only got this far thanks to McElhenney’s talents.
Reynolds goes on to explain that working on Deadpool & Wolverine was particularly stressful thanks to the excessive levels of expectation surrounding it. He then gives a clue as to what the scene would have entailed.
Reynolds said McElhenney’s TVA agent “Begged for his life, before Eliot caught his unsuspecting body in the air.“This matches perfectly with a moment in the first Deadpool & Wolverine Teaser trailer (see on Youtube), where a TVA agent is tied up, pleads for help, and is snatched by Alioth. With that in mind, this would have added another factor to it Deadpool & Wolverines final sequence in the void and could only have helped to over-stuff the movie as a result.
Why I think Deadpool and Wolverine shouldn’t keep Rob McElhenney’s cameo
The movie may have made some irreconcilable changes
I’m not about to be so hyperbolic as to call Deadpool & Wolverine A perfect movie, but it is safe to say that many correct decisions were made during its production. I’m happy to defer to Reynolds and the rest of the filmmakers’ better judgment as to whether McElhenney’s cameo would fit in the final product safe in the knowledge that The movie worked just fine without this minor alteration. One of the most common criticisms Deadpool & Wolverine Is his supposed overuse of cameos and fan service – although I strongly disagree on this particular issue.
Knowing that the fight sequence instead focused on the resistance members crushing it in a spectacular brawl, I think that omitting Alioth – and McElhenney’s scene – was ultimately for the best.
Based on what can be gleaned from the teaser trailer and Reynolds’ description, it seems that McElhenney’s cameo was cut as part of the decision to remove a final onslaught by Alioth with the villainous mutants and the members of the resistance all present. Knowing that the fight sequence was instead focused on the resistance members crushing it in a spectacular brawl, I think that omitting Alioth – and McElhenney’s cameo – was ultimately for the best. As Reynolds suggests, we can hopefully witness the humorous scene in Deadpool & Wolverines digital extras anyway.
