As they try to save a planet’s sun despite its people fearing them, the Phoenix and Jean Gray share a monologue in which their thought bubbles are in sync with each other. The two quickly become indistinguishable, highlighting just how synonymous they have become with each other since the merger. Jean recalls the moment she met the Phoenix as a defining point in her life, although she initially viewed it as the moment her life was saved, rather than realizing how significant the Phoenix would soon become in her life.
The Phoenix then transitions into talking about the other pivotal moment in Jean’s life, long before she met the Phoenix, which changed her life entirely – the death of her childhood friend.
