Dragon Age: The Veilguard – Which companions should you choose for the last gambit?

During the end of the game Dragon Age: The Veil Guard mission “The Last Gambit,” Rook must assign several of his allies to aid various factions in carrying out his ultimate plan. Although it is not technically the last mission in The Veil GuardThe Last Gambit“comprises the penultimate battle against Elgar’nan, as the game’s plot approaches its climactic point. Decisions made from here on out will affect the fates of Rook, Solas, their companions, and the rest of the world, so it’s important to understand what is involved and how the decision-making process works during “The Last Gambit.”

[Warning: This article contains major spoilers for Dragon Age: The Veilguard.]

The Last Gambit“is effectively divided into four different tasks, although the player only directly participates in one. They must delegate the rest to their various companions, each of whom can only help in a specific effort: removing the wards, fighting the warmage and defeat the Juggernaut Although there is no single right or wrong decision for each option, Various factors from the companion’s statistics and history influence his performance in carrying out your specific task. The results, if the player is not careful, can be devastating.

How “The Last Gambit” works

Companions, bonds and factions

Dragon Age The Veilguard six romantic companions at the library table: Davrin, Taash, Bellara, Emmerich, Lucanis, Harding and Neve

Essentially, players must assign a companion to each of three tasks, each of which is supported by a specific faction. When choosing a companion to support a task, players must consider several factors. In the first place, the chosen companion must have something in their history that aligns with the task assigned to them. For example, don’t send a rough warrior like Taash to handle a delicate task like dismantling magical wards.

Second, the companion assigned to each task must be a Veil Guard Hero. Iin fact, they will be at Bond level 10, which is effectively the level cap for companions in Dragon Age: The Veil Guard. Once they do, and the player has completed their personal quest, they will be declared Hero of the Guard of the Veil, a status that represents conquering their personal issues and unlocking a key ability.

Finally, It doesn’t hurt for the companion to have some connection to the faction they are working with and for that faction’s strength to be maximized if possible. Faction levels are capped at three stars or 3,200 points; players can upgrade the Guard of the Veil factions throughout the game, completing missions and selling items to faction merchants.

If the player has incompatible companions and tasks, failed to make them Veilguard Heroes, or skipped enough faction quests, there is a chance that one or more characters will die during “The Last Gambit.” Whoever they choose, regardless of all other factors, will be unavailable for the remainder of the mission. Therefore, it’s important to balance which characters are available, which characters have enough experience, and which characters Rook will need in his party on this crucial quest.

Who should support Veil Jumpers?

Uncovering the wards

As elven history geeks and magic experts, the Veil Jumpers will volunteer to take down the magical wards protecting Elgar’nan. It’s probably easier to max out the Veil Jumpers’ levels, as they are the first faction the player encounters during The Veil Guardcampaign. They are available to visit and level up all the time and are not as negatively affected by any major decisions as Antivan Crows can be, so they will naturally be at three stars at this point in most players’ save files.

Since dismantling the wards requires some magical experience, players should send a wizard to do wizard work. Bellara and Neve are excellent choices to help the Veil Jumpersparticularly Bellara because of her connection to that faction. However, Bellara or Neve will not be available after their capture in a previous mission, so whoever is available will do. If the player wants them to be in the party for this mission, then Emmrich or Harding can replace them, as long as they are Veil Guard Heroes and Veil Jumpers are at max.

Who should support the Antivan Crows and the Lords of Fortune?

Killing War Mage Venatori

About that, the experienced assassins of the Antivan Ravens and the brave adventurers of the Lords of Fortune will combine their forces to defeat a Venatori war mage. The Antivan Crows may be more difficult to level up, as their faction’s strength may have been affected by the previous destruction of Treviso if the player chose to aid Minrathous. That said, it should still be possible to get to three stars with both factions at the end of the game.

As a proven wizard slayer, Lucanis is the best choice to fight the war mage Venatori. Hopefully players have managed to max out his Bond level and make him a Veil Guard Hero, regardless of whether previous decisions have left him hardened and slow to progress. If he doesn’t fit the criteria, then Taash is a good replacement as a generally powerful warrior.

Who should support the Gray Wardens & Mourn Watch?

Taking down the Juggernaut

Finally, Rook will have to choose a companion to help the fearless Mourn Watch and the indomitable Gray Wardens defeat a giant, mechanized enemy called the Juggernaut.. Rook will likely have already maxed out both factions, but if not, companion choice here is critical.

An experienced warrior will do best here, making Taash or Davrin (himself a Gray Warden) the most obvious choices to kill the Juggernaut. If Davrin is unavailable and Taash has been assigned to a different faction, then Harding or Emmrich (a member of the Mourn Watch) are great backups. Again, if multiple options are available here, then choose whoever made Hero of the Veilguard, and is the least necessary for Rook’s preferred party composition at this point in the game.

With this, players should have ample options for combining companions and factions – as long as their faction strength is high and their companions have become Veilguard Heroes in all aspects. With these combinations, there should be no loss of life during The Last Gambit“, then players must be able to finish Dragon Age: The Veil Guard with most of the group alive.
