All over EvilElphaba has a complicated relationship with the other members of her family tree, and the dynamic heavily influences her journey to becoming the Wicked Witch of the West. One of the biggest questions explored in EvilThe question for both sides is whether people are born evil or whether evil is forced upon them – the age-old nature versus nature debate. The film leans solidly into the idea that Elphaba’s environment shapes her into who she is the moment she appears in The Wizard of Oz. Her relationship with her family members exemplifies the belief that Elphaba was forced to become evil by those around her.
By including Elphaba’s family as characters and exploring her connections to each of them, the film explains how she became an empathetic, marginalized woman who cares about justice for talking animals. Under other circumstances, she might never have become the villain of The Wizard of Oz. In addition to shaping Elphaba, two members of her family serve as main characters in Evil. His arcs are shaped by his relationship with Elphaba, so it’s crucial to understand the game’s dynamics.
Nessarose Thropp, Elphaba’s sister

Nessarose Thropp in Evil film and musical is the only sibling of Elphaba Thropp. Because her mother chewed milk flowers during pregnancy, Nessa was born prematurely with the umbilical cord wrapped around her legs, paralyzing her from the waist down. Despite being an extremely competent and capable person, everyone infantilizes the young woman because she uses a wheelchair. In particular, her father is overbearing and constantly underestimates her abilities. He even forces Elphaba to go to Shiz University alongside her sister to protect and care for her, believing that Nessarosse cannot take care of herself.
Elphaba is the only person who treats Nessa as a capable and intelligent person, fostering a positive relationship with the duo. Unfortunately, their experiences at Shiz University drive a wedge between the two while the younger sister becomes increasingly embarrassed by the way Elphaba acts. She wants her sister to be smaller, quieter and less noticeable. Whenever Elphaba defends herself or fights against individuals who bully her, Nessarose tells her sister to stop or acts as if she is ashamed of her sister.

Ultimately, the relationship between the sisters deteriorates due to how they prefer to deal with others’ behavior in relation to their physical differences. None of them can blend in with their peers. However, Nessa wishes to appease and appease the people who treat her differently, while Elphaba prefers to combat the ignorance and prejudice of her bullies. The older sister’s false bravado and carefree attitude bring exactly the kind of attention the younger sister wants to avoid. These coping methods have very different results at the end of the day. She refuses to help the Wizard hurt the animals, becoming his greatest adversary. Unbeknownst to either of them, The Wizard is Elphaba’s biological father in Evil.
The musical and the book differ in the way Elphaba was conceived. The dark Evil the book involves open sexual assault in which Melena doesn’t even remember what happened. The musical even blurs the lines of consent while getting her drunk on a green elixir before intercourse. At the end, This green elixir is the key to anyone learning about Elphaba’s true lineage in the musical. Elphaba keeps the potion bottle under her pillow at Shiz University, so Galinda recognizes that The Wizard has the same bottles.
The Grimmerie is written in a Latin language (which doesn’t exist in real life), which Elphaba can read because of her earthy side.
Knowledge about Elphaba’s biological father retrospectively explains why Elphaba is a magical prodigy who can read Grimmerie. Unlike other members of Oz, Elphaba was born into two different worlds. The Wizard is from Earth, while Melena Thropp is an Ozian. Her mixed heritage gives her abilities that others do not naturally possess. Additionally, the Grimmerie is written in a Latin language (which doesn’t exist in real life), which Elphaba can read because of her earthy side. The lineage creates a gripping circumstance where the villain’s terrible actions at the beginning Evil triggered his downfall in the end.
Melena Thropp, Elphaba’s mother

While Gregory Maguire Evil book features Melena Thropp heavily throughout the first section, she barely appears in the musical. When she appears in “No One Mourns the Wicked”, she waits for Frexpar to leave on business so she can have an affair. These actions create a rift between her and her husband, which fuels his adverse treatment of Elphaba after Melena’s death. After giving birth, she appears horrified by Elphaba’s green skin, but does not react as hostilely as Frexpar.
It is later revealed that during Melena’s second pregnancy, Frexpar forces her to chew milk flowers to ensure her child has white skin instead of green. Unfortunately, this induces premature labor, during which Melena dies. Melena’s death affects Elphaba over time, burdening her with an enormous sense of shame as she believes she is responsible for what happened – a message no doubt solidified by her father.

Node Evil musical and cinematographic, Frexpar Thropp is the biological father of Nessarose Thropp and raises Nessa and Elphaba, despite not being genetically related to the latter. When Elphaba is born with green skin, he immediately emotionally rejects the child and continues to treat her like a burden. After Melena gave birth to her second child, the father treats his two daughters differently, offering preferential treatment to the younger daughter.
As seen in the Meet Nessarose promotional video on Wicked movie channel on YouTubeFrexpar adores Nessa in a way that seems capable, even if he means well. Meanwhile, he parentizes Elphaba, expecting her to act as a mother and protector to Nessarose rather than letting her be a child. In “No One Mourns the Wicked”, Elphaba imagines that her father might finally be proud of her if she works with The Wizard, which shows that she never felt good enough for her father. Unfortunately, Frexpar’s attitude towards her eldest daughter never changes throughout the Evil musical.
