How to unlock destroyed gates in Dragon Age: The Veilguard

Rook and his companions can enter and restore the Crossroads in the Fade in Dragon Age: The Veil Guardbut only when they can gain access by eliminating Blight from various gates. At the very beginning of the history of Dragon Age: The Veil GuardRook will pass through the Eluvian to the Crossroads and meet the Caretaker, who asks them for help in restoring the place. In several locations around the Crossroads, there are gates blocked by vines and a round seal.

When Rook approaches these gates, the Caretaker will materialize to grant them an associated side quest in Dragon Age: The Veil Guard. These Blighted Gate quests task Rook and his team with tracking down Blighted creatures somewhere in the world called Champions. These are high-level bosses that drop Champion Essence, which is needed to break the seal and get through the gates. Opening all three Ruined Gates at the Crossroads in Dragon Age: The Veil Guard will allow Rook to complete the Regrets of the Dire Wolf and Heart of Corruption missions and receive a great benefit before the end of the game.

Where to find the destroyed gates

Approach all the gates to unlock their missions

The Plague-covered Gate of Lost Ages at the Crossroads in Dragon Age: The Veilguard

There are technically several Ruined Gates at the Crossroads in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. One is associated with the main story and is used to introduce the Blighted Gate and Champion mechanics and open the Regrets of the Dire Wolf quest line. Another is located on Beacon Island, the landing area where Rook uses the Eluvian on the Lighthouse. This door has three seals instead of just one and corresponds to the Heart of Corruption search.

The remaining Blighted Gates are listed as separate side quests, but are associated with one of these two larger Crossroads side quests. Players should plan to complete them to get good high-level items and a late-game advantage. These include:

  • The Gate of Deep Sorrows (the first gate on the left in Converging City, near the main story mission Blighted Gate; part of The Heart of Corruption)
  • The Gate of Lost Ages (Converging City; part of Regrets of the Dire Wolf)
  • The Gate of Vanished Glories (Elvhenan’s Haven; part of Regrets of the Dire Wolf)
  • The Gate of Dry Hopes (Elvhenan’s Haven; part of The Heart of Corruption)
  • The Gate of Pale Reflections (Heights of Athim; part of The Heart of Corruption)

Each Gate requires the Essence of one of the three Champions to open.

Rook approaches the Blight Cyst containing the Champion in Treviso associated with the Gate of Deep Sorrows in Dragon Age: The Veilguard.

Champions can be found in various regions of Thedas, encased in Plague Cysts. The corresponding locations are:

  • The Gate of Deep Sorrows: Treviso, Crows Road rooftops
  • The Gate of Lost Ages: Dock Town, Lost Company Mines
  • The Gate of Vanished Glories: Arlathan Forest, Contaminated Forests
  • The Gate of Dry Hopes: Hossberg marshes, ancient crossroads
  • The Gate of Pale Reflections: Hossberg Wetlands, Edge of Solitude

These Plague Cysts are often located in areas with other incredibly powerful enemies, so it’s a good idea to defeat these mobs before destroying the Plague Cyst to avoid creating a more difficult and often deadly combat encounter.

How to unlock the destroyed gates

Kill High Level Champions

Quyn the Sparkwielder, the Ruined Champion associated with the Gate of Lost Ages in Dock Town in Dragon Age: The Veilguard.

To unlock Ruined Gates in Dragon Age: The Veil GuardRook will need to travel to each of the areas listed above and destroy the Blight Cyst there, releasing a Champion and triggering a difficult boss fight. Many of these bosses are level 25 and above, so it’s best to avoid these side quests until at least level 20 or above, as otherwise they will likely be deadly.

Once Rook defeats a Champion, he will need to collect the Champion’s Essence and bring it back to the corresponding Ruined Gate at the Crossroads. They can then interact with the seal to open the gate and access the area beyond.
