As Marvel reinvents several icons Avengers heroes, your new version of an iconic vigilante is capable of defeating Captain AmericaUnbreakable shield like few people have ever done. Made from a unique ally of Vibranium, Captain America’s shield is an unbreakable and perfectly balanced weapon – one that can withstand nearly all forces in the Marvel Universe. However, as Marvel reimagines the Avengers franchise, Steve Rogers finally meets his match.
At Deniz Camp, Juan Frigeri, Federico Blee and Travis Lanham’s The Ultimates #5Cap is on a mission to test the new Hawkeye Charli Ramsey. Captain America interrupts Charli’s attack on a Roxxon oil refinery, intending to evaluate this new hero. However, Cap isn’t ready for Hawkeye’s arsenal, which includes one “inertia canceling arrow” which instantly steals all of your shield’s momentum on impact.
Not only that, but the new Hawkeye hits Steve Rogers with a sonic arrow that his shield can do nothing to combatand uses several arrows that change direction to hit Steve Rogers from behind. When Captain America’s shield has been defeated before, it’s usually been by literal gods, but even without powers, Charli Ramsey makes it clear that they have multiple ways around the iconic weapon. So far, Ultimate Hawkeye has featured the following types of arrows:

Captain America vs Hawkeye makes one clear huge advantage that the Ultimate Universe has over Marvel’s main Avengers franchise.
Ultimate Hawkeye takes off Captain America’s shield with a custom arrow
Charli Ramsey’s Arsenal could “take on an army”
Although Charli Ramsey has easily mastered her new arsenal, they were never meant to have it. Tony Stark designed Hawkeye equipment – including a high-tech ‘quiver’ that prints custom arrows on demand – for Clint Barton. However, in the Ultimate Universe, Clint rejected his iconic codename and weaponry, leaving them in the trash after failing to regain the heroic life he once had. he must would have lived, if the villainous Creator had not rewritten the timeline. Charli finds Hawkeye’s costume and takes the name, leaving Tony concerned that according to his metrics, they are not suited for a life of heroism.
Fortunately, the duel with Captain America convinces Steve Rogers that Charli has exactly what the Ultimates need, and the two finally team up to take down Roxxon’s troops, with the new Hawkeye being recruited into the Ultimates soon after. Although this Hawkeye still uses a bow and arrow, its capabilities are much more impressive than Clint Barton’s original, with Tony Stark stating that they wield:
Arrows that can follow a target for forty miles, cutting right angles at three times the speed of sound. Arrows that can blow holes in battleships and fry every electronic device within two hundred meters.
Hawkeye vs Captain America shows the Ultimate Universe’s biggest advantage
There are no stars of the show in this new continuity
Recognizing the vulnerabilities of Captain America’s shield and elevating Hawkeye to the level of heavy hitter are just two ways in which The latest is reinventing the Avengers franchise as fans know it. One of the Avengers’ greatest strengths is that as a property it brings together Marvel’s most iconic heroes, but this can also be a weakness. The Avengers’ biggest heroes also tend to have their own monthly series, which often take precedence over the team’s book. This limits how ambitious any Avengers the title can be, and often can, make them feel insensitive next to characters that the writers are able to move forward without ruining plans elsewhere.
On the other hand, the heroes of The latest only star in this title, at least so far. This gives comics a lot more freedom to make big moves and shape their characters in a way that best suits their story. Ultimate Captain America and Hawkeye do not need to sell their own titles or even appear in The latest every month, which means that when they to do appears, it’s because the creative team has an inventive and unrestricted idea of the best story to tell.
Hopefully, even as fan interest in the Ultimate Universe continues to grow, Marvel is able to maintain that momentum and continue making big creative changes, like transforming Hawkeye from Avengers‘least powerful member to Captain Americais unquestionably the same.
