NOTICE! Spoilers for Green Lantern: Dark #1One of DC Comics’ Most of the underrated universes made their long-awaited returns, only for their heroes to be tragically killed off. In DC’s new Other worlds story, the forgotten Tangent Universe becomes the setting for an apocalypse that results in the premature deaths of every hero fans may remember from the ’90s comics. Tangent’s heroes may be gone, but their legacy lives on through a new hero who fights in your name.
In Green Lantern: Dark #1 by Tate Brombal, Werther Dell’Edera, Giovanna Niro and Tom Napolitano, Solomon Grundy was revived by Green Lantern Tangente and the search for attacking the other heroes. Familiar faces from DC’s alternate universe – including the Atom, this continuity’s replacement for Superman – appear, proving the connection between this mysterious new world and the Tangent Universe. Together, they make a final stand against Grundy, although their efforts are, unfortunately, in vain.
All of the Tangent superheroes die in battle as Grundy’s forces take over the world and plunge it into darkness. Their deaths mean the end of the Tangent Universe as fans knew itwith no return in sight for these variants of DC’s superhero multiverse.
DC Comics Permanently Eliminates Tangent Universe Heroes
Earth-9’s superheroes meet their shocking end in battle
The Tangent Universe began in 1997 with a series of one-shots, all redefining classic DC heroes in unique ways. Tangent Comics’ name is derived from how these heroes differ so much from their main continuity counterparts that they are only “tangentially” related to themdespite using the same names. For example, the Tangent version of the Flash has light-based powers rather than a connection to the Speed Force, while the Joker is a superhero with anarchist traits. These heroes, among others like Plastic Man and Wonder Woman, are seen fighting to the end in Green Lantern: Dark #1.
After their debut in the 1990s, this universe’s heroes became less and less prevalent over the years as the original versions remained strong in DC lore. His last prominent appearance was in 2015 Convergence eventwhen all the universes that were erased in Flashpoint were briefly restored. While they have no relevance in the modern era of comics, it’s still shocking to see DC officially eliminate them altogether, erasing a team of heroes that could have properly returned. However, their deaths are not without purpose, as they give rise to a new hero in their place.
DC’s New Green Lantern Continues Tangent Heroes’ Legacy
Rina Mori inherits Green Lantern Tangent’s powers to fight in his honor
With the heroes of the Tangent Universe wiped out by Grundy, only Green Lantern remains as the last surviving superhero. This Lantern, Rina Mori, alludes to her powers granted to her by the previous Green Lantern. Rina is therefore confirmed as the successor to Green Lantern Tangent, so their designs and powers are very similar.
Only this Green Lantern maintains the legacy of the heroes who gave their lives, so that their contributions to the universe are not completely lost to time. DC ComicsThe forgotten universe lives on thanks to Green Lantern, as she carries the torch – or, in her case, the lantern – passed down to her by the superheroes of Tangent.
