The Mad Max The franchise has some of the most iconic, leather-clad villains in movie history, but not all of them were as compelling as others, and only one can be considered the best. Over the Mad Max Timeline, villains like Lord Humungus, Dementus and more have been terrorizing the world of Mad Max. They are incredibly important to the franchise, because they show the low that humanity has stooped in the apocalypse, and they contrast the heroism of Max and Furiosa. Some of them did things better than others, and only one of them played the villain best.
While each Mad Max Villain brought something unique to the franchise, they can still be compared. The best villain of the franchise will be one that serves as a good antagonist on their own, but also one that fits the series best. The Mad Max The franchise has such a distinct style and overarching theme, and some villains simply work better within that theme than others. Thus, the antagonists of Mad Max Will be analyzed based on their importance to the story, how equally evil they actually are, and how well they fit in Mad MaxIt’s a unique blend of madness and survival.

Aunty Entity – Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome
Played by: Tina Turner
Anti entity, the main antagonist of the worst Mad Max movie, Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdomeis also the franchise’s worst villain. While Entity is the least compelling villain in the series, it’s not necessarily her, or Tina Turner’s, fault. In fact, Entity is a fairly compelling character, and Turner is a fairly compelling actor. She clearly runs Bartertown well, aside from her mystery of Lord Blaster, and she has enough ingenuity to use pig waste as an alternative fuel source. The main reason Aunt Entity is the worst villain in Mad Max Is because she’s hardly a villain.
Related
Aunty Entity sure did some villainous things, like her people attacking Max, tricking Max into killing Blaster and finishing the job herself, and more. The thing is, the Aunty Entity did nothing Beyond Thunderdome was particularly cruel or unhappy. She is easily one of the most benevolent leaders of a settlement in the entire franchise, and most of her actions can be excused as her trying to protect Bartertown. Aunty Entity is far from the villain and easy to hate characters Mad Max is known for.
Entity is also held back by Beyond Thunderdome itself, and especially its ending. Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome is widely regarded as the worst entry in the franchise, and the characters are usually only as good as the story they’re a part of. A great example of how the story failed Anti Entity is when she simply spares Max and drives off. It was a very confusing moment, and while it makes sense for Entity to respect Max’s ingenuity and ability to survive, it’s not a great villain moment. In another movie, Aunty Entity would be a great character, but she is not a great one Mad Max Villain.

ToeCutter – Mad Max
Played by: Hugh Keays-Byrne
The original Mad Max is quite different from the rest of the franchise, and so is its main villain, Toecutter. Unlike later entries in the series, the original Mad Max Still doesn’t have his signature post-apocalyptic setting. For the most part, it served as a relatively standard revenge story, admittedly with some odd costume choices and an unusual police force. Because the original Mad Max Was fairly normal, so was Toukater. for most Mad MaxToecutter is just a slightly deranged leader of a mostly normal biker gang. He’s just a little too plain to really stand out in a franchise like that Mad Max.
Related
The main reason ToeCutter beats Anti Entity as a more compelling villain is because he does quite a bit more evil things, and he has a much bigger impact on Max. Toekutter and his gang killed Jessie, Max’s wife, and their young son, Sprog, by running them down in the street. This sent Max on a murder-filled revenge quest, and it’s because of Toekator that he became the Road Warrior. Tokuter also gave Max his signature limp after his men shoot him in the leg. These crimes make Toekator sufficiently sadistic Mad Max Villains.
Unfortunately, killing Max’s family isn’t enough to cement ToeCutter as an iconic villain, and he’s simply superior to other antagonists.. Other than those few moments, Toekater didn’t really do anything memorable. Most of his scenes in the original Mad Max See him arguing with his gang or engaging in random crimes. Toketer had no grand plan, and he really had no goals other than general chaos and disgust. He also had one of the least climactic deaths in the franchise, one that was even outclassed in the same movie. All in all, toe cutter is not as good as others Mad Max Antagonists.

Lord Humungus – Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior
Played by: Kjell Nilsson
Sir Humungus, the main villain of Mad Max 2: The Road Warrioris the quintessential Mad Max Villain. From his hockey mask and leather belt to the biker gang he commanded, everything about Humungus tells the audience that he was a product of the wasteland, and a particularly messed-up one at that.. Humungus was sadistic, brutal, cruel, and incredibly deadly, and his very appearance alone conveyed that. Even with such effective clothing, however, his mask left an air of mystery about him, and the mystery of how his face was burned is one of the most enduring questions in Mad Max.

Aside from his appearance, there are several things about Lord Humungus that make him a very compelling villain. Although he was clearly capable of taking down his enemies physically, he was also a master of rhetoric and manipulation. If it wasn’t for Max, Humungus would probably have taken over the oil refinery by trickery alone, making him twice as threatening..
The main thing holding Humungus back from being a better villain is how little he actually does The Road Warrior. Humungus is only in a handful of scenes throughout the film, and his most notable actions include killing Pappagallo and leading the gang. In most of the action scenes in The Road WarriorWez upstages Humungus, and is arguably a bigger problem for Max and the tribe. He could also have a much more significant effect on the emotional narrative of the movie, if Humungus’ missing backstory as Goose from the original Mad Max was not cut.

Dementus – Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
Played by: Chris Hemsworth
The first and only villain Max did not fight himself is one of the best antagonists Mad Max has seen everything. Dementus was the main villain of Furiosa: A Mad Max SagaAnd although he never interacted with Max, he left an undeniable mark on the franchise. A big reason Dementus is so compelling as a villain is because he’s basically Lord Humungus turned up to 11. Like Humungus, Dementus is a physically imposing man with a fittingly dramatic wardrobe, and he commands a similarly intimidating gang of bikers. Where Dementus really stands alone, however, is in his madness.
Related
Dementus is so many things at the same time. In one scene, he is a sympathetic man, grieving the loss of his family and his life before the apocalypse, and there is something hauntingly relatable to his fascination with Furiosa. In the next scene, he is a ruthless warlord whose only motivations seem to be chaos and sadism. On top of his conflicted nature, Dementus has some stellar lines delivered perfectly by Chris Hemsworth, making him endlessly entertaining to watch. Dementia is easily one of the most insane Mad Max Villains, which is really saying something for the franchise.
Another extremely interesting part of Dementus is his role in Furiosa’s story. For almost her entire life, dementia was a constant source of pain, abuse and tragedy. Dementus killed her mother and her lover, Praetorian Jack, enslaved Furiosa for years as a child, and forced her to cut off her own arm.. Dementus is so brilliantly dark and ruthless that he easily earns a spot as the second-best villain in Mad Max. He even made a case for being the best in the franchise, but Dementus was beaten by one other villain.

Immortal Joe – Mad Max: Fury Road
Played by: Hugh Keays-Byrne
Although it was close, Immortan Joe is the best villain of all Mad Max. Immortal Joe delivers everything one could want from a Mad Max Wicked, and then some. From his iconic design with his respirator and white hair to his unique band of War Boys and his command over the Citadel, Immortal Joe is just the cream of the crop as far as antagonists go.. Immortal Joe really combines some of the best parts of each other Mad Max Villain in one almost perfect antagonist for Mad Max: Fury Road.
Related
Immortal Joe is as ingenious as the Aunt Entity: he ran the Citadel incredibly effectively, and he found a substitute for water through Mother’s Milk. He is as important as Talkator: he was the only villain to appear in two Mad Max movies, and he immediately changed both Max and Furiosa in fundamental ways. He is as physically imposing as Humungus, and his War Boy followers are even more intimidating. He is also crazy like Dementus: he searched the whole citadel just to hunt down all his wives. Although he was a combination of the best of the villains before and after him, Immortal Joe also set himself apart.
All the wicked in Mad Max Made himself easy to hate in different ways, but Immortal Joe was more vile than anyone else. From his treatment of his wives and children to his hardening of water and his cult-like control over the War Boys, there are so many reasons to hate him. His sheer lack of likability made him the perfect antagonist, one anyone would feel good about rooting against. Immortal Joe is the best villain in Mad Max And a perfect symbol for the horrors of the wasteland.
