Warning: There are spoilers ahead for Season 3, Episode 8, “Thresholds.”
Almost two years after being introduced, Of answered a great mystery of Boyd Stevens (Harold Perrineau). After climbing one of the Offrom the distant trees, Boyd was trapped at the bottom of a well and only found a way out when a rope was thrown towards him. during the season 2 premiere. When Boyd used the rope to climb up, the only person up there was a man named Martin (Robert Verlaque), who was chained to the wall. The problem is that if Martin had been chained to the wall, he couldn’t have thrown the rope to Boyd.
Who threw the rope became another mystery, and with the threat of the Music Box Monster being unleashed, the mystery faded into the background as OfThe characters had more important and deadly matters at hand. Since Boyd broke the music box and seemingly ended the threat unleashed in the dungeon at the end of Of In Season 2, the rope mystery didn’t seem important moving forward. However, the question was not only answered in season 3, but it opened the door to a whole new corner of Ofthe story.
Season 3 finally reveals who threw the rope to Boyd in the dungeon pit
The answer is only possible through time travel
When Julie Matthews (Hannah Cheramy) returns to the ruins she found with Randall (AJ Simmons) in Of Season 3, Episode 7, she is transported to the dungeon and meets the captive Martin. Being in the dungeon causes Julie to travel through timewhen she first sees herself, Randall and Marielle (Kaelen Ohm) chained to the walls and being tormented like they were before Boyd destroyed the music box. When they disappear, Julie travels even further back when Martin is talking to someone at the bottom of the well, not realizing it’s Boyd at the beginning of season 2.
Martin tells her to throw the rope to the ground, which she does, confirming that a future version of Julie was the one who threw the rope to Boyd. This is a revolutionary revelation that officially makes time travel part of the Ofthe story. When Julie’s body is removed from the ruins, her consciousness returns to the present. If this hadn’t happened, she could have continued traveling through time and been shown to have influenced other past events.
How Martin Knew Who Julie Was From Season 3, Episode 8
Time travel has just begun
While much about Martin remains mysterious, he likely knew who Julie was because of her time travel. After Martin’s disappearance, she continues traveling through time and hears the voice of her mother, Tabitha Matthews (Catalina Sandino Moreno), when Victor (Scott McCord) was waiting for her in the tunnels where Ofmonsters sleep. Julie will likely return to the dungeon and continue traveling back, where she can meet Martin earlier in his life.perhaps when he was arrested for the first time, or even before that, when he lived in Vila.
Now this Of opened the door to time travel, this could be used to answer many unsolved mysteries and form connections across the timeline of the city’s seemingly vast history.
This episode marks the first time Julie meets Martin, but due to time travel, it may not be the first time he meets her. That could explain how Martin knows other things despite being trapped in the dungeonincluding when he asked Boyd in Season 2 if his wife, Abby (Lisa Ryder) could be right about his nightmarish experiences being a dream.
