Penguin was highly rated (including by ScreenRant), and this success will certainly also influence whether Batman spin-off will return for a second season. The first episode garnered more than 16 million total viewers, with 1.9 million tuning in to the penultimate episode during its Sunday night release window.

Colin Farrell’s comments seem like a roadblock to any potential second season, as he has been very vocal about how difficult the filming process was. When asked by Total Movie on whether he believes a second season is possible, Farrell responded:

I don’t know, man. Don’t get me wrong – I loved it – but it messed with me a little. By the end, I was complaining and moaning to anyone who would listen that I wanted it to end. I tried to remind them that I felt ‘grumpy gratitude’. I was still grateful and honored – I grew up watching Burgess Meredith [who played the role in the ’60s TV series]and then Danny DeVito [in Tim Burton’s 1992 film Batman Returns] it was my penguin – so being part of the lineage of that narrative, I really felt privileged. But in the end… it’s not like I didn’t know who I was and I was going out and burning cars and stuff like that, but… if you take what Matt Reeves created and then what Lauren [LeFranc, showrunner] did and what Mike [Marino, prosthetics and make-up designer] I did it and put it all together, it was a really powerful experience.

That “powerful experience” is probably referring to how laborious the role has become after using such a significant amount of prosthetics on a regular basis.

What we know about Penguin’s future in the Batman universe

Batman director Matt Reeves has long called The penguin the “entry point” for the next sequence, saying it will be “Absolutely connected to where we left things in the series. There are details that really connect to the way the next film begins and the way Oz enters that world when we hand the baton back to Batman.” He also said Deadline that “Colin [Farrell] will be part of the film. We share [the script] as we’re following DC and the studio, and they’re super excited.”

More recently, Farrell himself spoke to Collider about its future potential in Batman Part IIwhich will go into production in 2025, and was not exactly concrete in its confirmation:

“No, no, but I would say Dylan will probably let me know very soon. I could call Dylan today and ask him, I suppose, what we’re seeing and when we’re going to start filming and all that, but I’ve had enough of all that for now. I need to get away and stay at home, relax, watch movies and go for walks.”

Penguin Season 2 Cast: Who Could Return?

The list of survivors after the finale is remarkably small considering the size of the The penguinIt’s cast. Oz Cobb would be able to reprise his lead role, but the inherent violence Batman The franchise and Oz’s thirst for absolute power meant that even his closest allies ended up severely exhausted. The most likely character to return alongside him would be Deidre O’Connell’s Francis Cobb, although she remains in a persistent vegetative state after her stroke at the end. Given that Oz refused to comply with her request to kill her if that happened, she would likely return without much active participation.

Rhenzy Feliz clearly can’t return after his character – Victor Aguilar – was killed off in the finale, but Cristin Milioti’s Sofia Gigante is still a possibility as she ends up in Arkham againwhile his partner in crime, Dr. Julian Rush (Theo Rossi), is somehow working there again. This could suggest he plans to help her escape, creating another round of conflict with Oz.

Oz’s girlfriend, Eve Karlo (Carmen Ejogo), remains in play (with a troubling new Oedipal element), and Gotham’s new generation of gang bosses (including Robert Lee Leng’s Link Tsai) are primed for more prominent roles . The same goes for Rhys Coiro’s Gotham advisor Sebastian Hady, who Oz uses in the final episode as a clever means to clear his name. Almost everyone is dead, so barring a few ghostly returns, the show would probably need to bring in some new talent.

The Penguin Season 2 Story: What Could Be

How Another Season Could Expand Penguin’s Story

The penguin season two would likely depict its titular villain at the height of his power. Given the creative license that Matt Reeves and other writers have demonstrated with their interpretation of the Batman mythos, it’s difficult to tease out specific stories from DC Comics that the next season might try to adapt. With Penguin ready to reappear in Batman – Part IIhowever, there’s a chance that Penguin and Batman’s long history after the film could even see them cooperating out of expediency against a greater threat.

Oz Cobb’s predilection for exploring political corruption would put him at odds with the Riddler (Paul Dano), whose army of followers remains active behind the scenes. The penguin. Their agenda is to end corruption in Gotham, and Oz has effectively put a target on their back if they discover their association with Councilman Hady.

Interestingly, we still don’t know if Robert Pattinson’s Batman remains fully active in Gotham, after Batmanis ending, but the final scene of The penguin at least it offers an important hint that Jim Gordon believes so. Whether a potential second season would see him involved more prominently remains to be seen: the reality is that the series worked so well without him that it would almost be a shame to include him again. But there would have to be a very big reason to justify this, as there was here.
