Spoiler alert for Ghosts season 4, episode 4, ‘The Work Retreat’CBS Ghosts is setting up its main characters, Sam (Rose McIver) and Jay (Utkarsh Ambudkar), to be more successful than those who inspired their show – an important and promising departure from the source material. Ghosts UK, a British series for the BBC with the same name and premise, inspires the American series. Ghosts UK centers on Mike (Kiell Smith-Bynoe) and Allison (Charlotte Ritchie), who move into Button House after Allison inherits the property from a distant relative. Just like Sam and Jay, the Ghosts US Characters based on their UK counterparts make the mansion their home and turn it into a bed and breakfast.
There are significant differences between the couples and their respective series, and one of the variations could make the CBS series more successful than its predecessor. Ghosts UK ended after five seasons, while the American Ghosts is currently in its fourth season. The CBS series could have lasted longer, especially since Sam and Jay have some advantages in their situation that Mike and Allison didn’t, namely the nature of the spirits in Woodstone Manor and how they impact the lives of the living inhabitants.
Ghost spirits are much more useful than their UK counterparts
The characters in the BBC series Ghosts UK are persistently more uncomfortable
Sam and Jay’s biggest advantage over Mike and Allison are the spirits they live with. CBS spirits are more helpful than their BBC counterpartsand the ghosts of the British series bother you all the time. Spirits like Fanny (Martha Howe-Douglas), the Captain (Ben Willbond) and Robin (Laurence Rickard) constantly bother Allison. The American series begins like this, but in season 4, the spirits have already adapted to exist cohesively with “the living” and rarely gets in the way of Sam’s life (except Ghosts‘Solitaire season 4). Ultimately, they make Sam and Jay’s situation better.
In addition to eventually evolving beyond the menacing qualities of the original ghosts, the American spirits carry Sam and Jay’s lives forward. For example, Sam writes, and Isaac (Brandon Scott Jones) asks her to write her memoir. When Sam finally gets an offer, she gets a nice $20,000 book advance. Although Isaac insists that Sam share the money with him, he invests it back into Jay’s business. So, in Ghosts season 4, episode 4, Trevor (Asher Grodman) gets a job and offers to split his bonus with Sam and Jaywhich is enough to cover the cost of the font.
How USA’s Ghosts Make Sam and Jay More Successful Than Alison and Mike
The couples in the series Ghosts need money to renovate and run their businesses
In Ghosts UK, Mike and Allison run out of options to stay at the Button House. Your business is going bankrupt and, to make matters worse, lightning sets fire to your Gatehouse in the andfinale of season 4, decimating the only source of income that the financially struggling couple has. Although Sam and Jay started out frugal, their business grew every day. Ghosts season, so they don’t have to worry about missing it. All of this suggests that the American couple’s journey running the Woodstone B&B may last longer than Mike and Allison’s bed and breakfast, and the ghosts will no doubt continue to help them.
Ghosts season 4 continues on CBS on Thursdays.
