Two Oscar-Trendy Films Become Top 2024 Awards Season Candidates to Pass Major Box Office Milestone

On the same weekend, two new films that are strong candidates for 2025 Oscar became the first awards season offerings to surpass a major box office milestone. Although the Oscars in any year include nominations for films released the previous year, awards season tends to heat up in the fall. The period between October and December typically sees the highest concentration of buzzy films vying for awards, as they remain fresh in the conversation as various awards bodies select their nominees.

Many of the year’s biggest Oscar contenders for Best Picture have yet to debut in theaters, as the list of most talked-about titles includes Adrien Brody’s historical drama. The BrutalistRidley Scott’s belated sequel Gladiator IIand the Bob Dylan biopic A complete stranger. However, some of them have already debuted in theaters in the fall of 2024including the modern Cinderella story by Sean Baker anoraNetflix music offering Emilia Pérezand Saoirse Ronan’s war drama Blitz.

THE Conclave launch and the We live in time The release reached a major milestone at the domestic box office that same weekend. Conclave stars Ralph Fiennes as a cardinal who uncovers important secrets during the politically charged period when the new Pope is being chosen. We live in timewhich premiered several weeks earlier, is a non-linear romance starring Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh.

Put Deadlinefrom Sunday morning, both Conclave and We live in time are projected to surpass the $20 million mark at the domestic box office until the end of the day. The former is projected to earn a 3-day total of $4.1 million, bringing its cumulative domestic total to $21.5 million, while the latter’s $2.2 million 3-day total brings it to a cumulative total of US$21.8 million. This simultaneously makes them the first awards season releases to surpass the $20 million domestic mark.

While they are the first Oscar contenders to reach that threshold during awards seasona few other 2024 titles were released before October, have major prize buzz, and have already surpassed the $20 million mark, i.e. Challengers ($50.1 million), The Wild Robot ($125.7 million) and Dune: Part Two ($282.1 million).

Conclave has so far been more prominent in the awards conversation, given its Certified Fresh 91% Rotten Tomatoes score and the fact that it was directed by Edward Berger, who previously directed 2022. All Quiet on the Western Frontwhich was nominated for nine Oscarwinning four. However, commercial success can sometimes get the attention of the AcademySo the fact that We live in time is performing on par with Ralph Fiennes’ celebrated film could mean its Oscar prospects are getting a lot stronger.
