What kind of fish is best for the fish pond in Stardew Valley?

Choosing which species to put in a Valley of the Stars Fish farm can be an incredibly difficult decision. Firstly, there are 70 different species of fish in the Valley of the Stars. By the time the player unlocks their first fish pond, it’s likely they haven’t even discovered all the available types. Couple this with the fact that there’s no way of knowing what each species of fish will produce when placed in a pond, and it’s easy to get stuck in a state of decision fatigue.

Fish ponds must be commissioned in accordance with robin

in his carpentry shop and cost 200 stones, 5 seaweed and 5 green algae to build. Construction takes two in-game days. However, a fish pond can be built at any time; there is no need to unlock them or special events that players need to witness before starting construction. Fish placed in a pond will multiply over time, occasionally asking the player to bring them a certain item before they can continue their reproduction. These fish can be caught and sold, but a fish pond will also occasionally reward the player with certain items.

What Each Fish Farm Species Offers You

Four Stardew Valley players walking or fishing in a trio of ponds

In StarThe items produced by a fish pond depend on both the species of fish living within it and its total population. As a general rule, the more fish there are in a lake, the rarer the items they will produce.

The table below includes each species of fish in Valley of the Stars and what they produce in a fish pond in different population numbers. Keep in mind that even if a certain lake is capable of producing a certain item, there is no guarantee that this will happen. He can still produce lower tier items, and will often do so more regularly, as rarer items tend to be less likely to appear. However, over time, even the rarest spawns will appear occasionally.

Note that most Crab Pot

fish and bottom feeders are generally not good candidates for fish ponds as they tend to produce a lot of waste. Also note that normally, the rarer the fish, the rarer its product. The most common fish simply produce only Roe

but rare fish that can only be caught during, say, the deep-sea fishing minigame in the Night Market tend to yield some interesting items.

Sturgeon is best for your first fish pond

Making and selling caviar

Stardew Valley player standing near a fish pond with sturgeon roe

For the first fish pond, the player builds Valley of the Stars, Sturgeon
are an excellent option. Like most fish, sturgeon produce normal old roe, which in itself is not worth much. However, put it in a canning jar for a few days and it will soon turn into Caviar

which can be sold for 500g each (or 700g with the Artisan perk).

But why Sturgeon

over any other roe-producing fish? On the one hand, Sturgeon is the only fish that can produce caviar; other fish simply produce different types of aged roe

. The price of Aged Roe depends on the base price of the fish that produced it. In some cases, this leads to significantly higher prices than 500g of Caviar. However, these fish are much less likely to produce roe, and when they do, they tend to produce less roe. Sturgeon, on the other hand, regularly produce eggs and can produce up to two per day.

Furthermore, Sturgeon are generally easy to find and easy to catch. This makes a sturgeon pond easy to set up, meaning players can start producing caviar quickly. Of course, if you later catch a rarer fish with more desirable rewards, you can always empty the first pond and replace its contents with whatever you want – or simply build a second one.

Rainbow trout are great for a second pond

A rare chance at prismatic shards

A rainbow trout at the Stardew Valley beach farm.

Once the player gathers another 200 stones and decides to go to another fish pond, rainbow trout
It’s an excellent second choice. Although they are more difficult to catch, being only available during the summer, rainbow trout can provide rare and excellent rewards with very little input from the player. Like most other fish, they produce Roe

but it’s the rest of the loot table that makes things interesting.

Rainbow trout have a rare chance to produce a Prismatic Shard

or a Rainbow Shell

instead of Roe. Both items are rare, but Prismatic Shards in particular have multiple uses: Prismatic Shards are needed to forge items, and the player also needs one to complete the Lost Package and reopen the cinema. They can also take one to the Desert and stand between three pillars to receive the excellent Galaxy Sword. Prismatic Shards are also gifts that are almost universally loved by everyone in town except Haley.

Still, the chance of generating a Prismatic Shard is exceptionally rare; players should still expect to get Roe most of the time. It’s not as valuable as Caviar, but it will still earn the player a bit of passive income every now and then. Over time, though, with a few fishponds filled with the right types of fish, players will be on the right path to fortune and rare items in Valley of the Stars.
