There are a multitude of optional bosses in Dragon Age: The Guard of the Veil, but the series you will find in the “Heart of Corruption“The missions, including Protector’s Fall, are truly worth your time. The Fall of the Protector appears specifically in the “Gate of Pale Reflections“quest step you will find at the Crossroads, but it’s all part of the “Heart of Corruption“mission. You’ll need to do a few things to reach the boss, but once you do that, you’ll have your work cut out for you.
Dragon Age: The Veil Guard It’s full of mysterious destroyed gates, difficult enemies, and incredible rewards, and you’re almost always rewarded for following through with difficult side quests. The Fall of the Protector fight is one such example; Finding your way to the boss is tricky and will require some hunting. Once you do, however, you’ll have a chance to take down this enemy and collect the rewards it leaves behind.
How to Find the Chief Protector’s Drop
Open the Gate of Pale Reflections
Before facing Protector’s Fall, there are a few things you need to do. Firstly, you will need to get the “Heart of Corruption“search at the crossroads walking to the Prague gate with the three locks next to the Eluvian that takes you from the Lighthouse to the Crossroads. Once you’ve done this, you’ll need to head to Hossberg Wetlands.
In the Wetlands, you should find a large cyst-like Blight cocoon surrounded by Darkspawn enemies. Clear the Darkspawn and open the pod to face Amarell, the Unknown. This is a level 25 ruined orc boss that attacks you hard. As he is a Darkspawn, he is weak to fireSo avoid his attacks while using your own skills and the skills of your companions to take him down. After being defeated, he will drop a Champion Essence.
You will then need to use this Essence to open the Gate of Pale Reflections in Athim Heights. If you have the right Essence, you are looking for another plague-blocked gate, which should open for you. Opening this gate will take you to Protector’s Fall.
How to Defeat Protector Drop
The protector is a magical boss, so be careful with ranged attacks
Unlike the other two Revenant bosses in the “Heart of Corruption“quest line, Fall of the Protector is not a spear and shield user. This means you will ignore any muscle memory you gained in the other two fights to properly face the Fall. Instead of melee attacks, Fall will attack you with magic, which is annoying and harder to avoid.
Before you can even face Protector’s Fall, you’ll need to defeat the Undead Horde that crawls out of the crevasses and piles of bones scattered throughout the arena. This Horde has a large health bar, but each Horde member also has their own health bar. Remember to use the right attacks against Armored and Barriered enemies to defeat the Horde efficiently. After the Horde is defeated, the Protector’s Fall will awaken.
Fall is a level 42 boss who really means business. It’s vulnerable to Cold and resistant to Fire, so bring Snow along for extra help. In case of emergency, you can also respect Rook in DA: Veilguard to make them more suitable for fighting. As mentioned earlier, he mostly uses magic to take you down, which you can see in Trophy players‘fight it on YouTube. Here are some of the attacks you need to watch out for:
Attack |
Tip |
---|---|
Ice Ring |
Every now and then, the Fall summons spikes of ice to surround her. If you stay close enough or far enough away, you can avoid taking damage from this AoE attack. |
Ice Dam |
Autumn will throw a six-ray ice storm at you. If you’re close, they’ll hit you pretty hard, so stay further away to give yourself more time to dodge these projectiles. |
Ice Orb |
This is a minor attack, but Fall will turn into a sphere of ice and fly away from you, creating a ring of ice where he will land and deal AoE damage. |
Prague Storm |
Plague bombs will fall from the sky, landing in red-marked areas of the arena and leaving puddles of Prague behind. |
Ice Ray |
Fall will channel a beam of ice magic at you. It looks like Fall can’t hit you with this one if you’re close enough to him, so be ready to dodge or get really close when he starts channeling. |
When you reduce Protector’s Fall to around 60% health, your shield will return and begin drawing energy from the Fade tear, healing itself. When this happens, use RT to break his shield as quickly as possible to prevent him from healing. The shield will break when you reduce the blue bar to zero, allowing you to harm your health once again.
I tend to underutilize my runic abilities when I’m in battle, so don’t forget about those super useful passive buffs you have on cooldown.
After breaking the shield and returning to the damage phase, Fall will summon some non-boss add-ons for you to clear, but they will have shields. This will make them challenging, but not impossible, to deal with. Use any AoE skill to defeat them or keep them out of your way as you continue facing Fall.
At around 45% HP, Fall will do what many other demonic enemies do and separate you from your allies. There’s not much you can do about it other than survive and keep dealing damage, as your companions will not be able to see or damage the Fall during this period. A black mist will also surround you, so it’s in your best interest to stay close to the Drop to watch out for its attacks.
Eventually, you’ll deal enough damage to defeat Protector’s Fall. You will receive the following rewards:
Reward |
Amount |
---|---|
Etheric Remnant |
6 |
Lament Watch Force |
100 |
Revenant Essence |
1 |
Unique Chest |
1 |
Unique Chests seem to reward you based on your class, so I’m not sure what you’ll get. Generally, though, there are unique items in Dragon Age: The Veilguard that are very powerful and worth considering. “Heart of Corruption“is one of the steps to achieve Guard of the VeilThe secret ending of, making it even more essential for completists. Either way, you will have defeated the Protector’s Fall and can now continue to defend the Crossroads against the Plague.
