Before his sudden death in March 2024, Akira Toriyama was extremely excited to share his last Dragon ball project, Dragon Ball Daimawith the world. Now this Daima premiered, fans may finally get some insight into what he was so happy to share.
One of Akira Toriyama’s final messages to the public was an enthusiastic endorsement of Daimacelebrating its “intense, action-packed” tone and stating that the show had “plenty of substance.” Daima was originally conceived without Toriyama’s involvement, but when the production team turned to Toriyama for advice, he became deeply involved in the series, shaping everything from its look to its worldview. Toriyama was not only pleased with what they created, but also proud of it, and it’s a shame he never saw the reaction to the series.
Daima began hinting at the series’ purpose recently, and now we may have an idea of what got Toriyama so excited.
Dragon Ball Daima could reveal the franchise’s biggest mysteries
Daima is answering questions fans have had for years
In episode #4 of DaimaGoku asks Glorio about the Demon Realm’s dragon balls, and Glorio responds, stating that these are the “original” dragon balls, created long before those on Earth or even Namek. The origins and purpose behind the Dragon Balls have remained a mystery since their inception, simply treated as something that has always existed as far as any character (except Kami) is concerned.. Fans often wonder what led Kami to create the Dragon Balls and what reason there is for their existence, given the potential danger they can pose.
With Daima Going back to the first set of Dragon Balls, it looks like fans may finally get an answer as to why the Dragon Balls exist. Responding to this mystery, which has been present since the first chapters of Dragon ballit would certainly be an exciting prospect, and for Toriyama to delve into such a subject nearly 40 years later would certainly be a reason for him to be so excited. If Toriyama was satisfied with the explanation he gave and eager to share it with fans, he would no doubt be as excited as he apparently was in his last message.
Toriyama’s pride in Daima is justified
Daima has already impressed the public
Even with just a few episodes, Dragon Ball Daima It made a huge impact among fans, who largely accepted the series enthusiastically, despite some initial concerns due to the use of a boy Goku in the series once again. Daima is bringing back many of the best elements of the original Dragon balllike your sense of wonder and adventure. Making Goku small again proved to be a surprisingly smart move, as it helps bring home a sense of adventure and call back those first Dragon ball days, when Toriyama seemed to be more satisfied with his work.
Daima it just seems fundamentally “getting” Dragon ball in a way that is difficult to describe, and this is certainly due to the influence of Toriyama. Limiting the cast (at least initially) to a small group, mainly featuring characters like Supreme Kai who still have a lot of unanswered questions, was a brilliant decision, allowing the series to focus more on the adventure element. The series also hinted at revealing more about Supreme Kai and his past, explaining a critical element of Dragon ball tradition that until now has been ignored.
Between the Supreme Kai and the Dragon Balls themselves, Daima could end up being the most impactful series in terms of revealing the franchise’s lore. It has already had a huge impact simply by visiting the Demon Realm, a corner of the Dragon ball universe that was established to exist a long time ago, but which has been largely ignored (at least in canon material) since it was first mentioned in the Buu Saga. Enriching the tradition of Dragon ball through Daima could very well be seen as Toriyama’s final gift to fans.
Toriyama’s involvement in Daima emphasizes its value
While Dragon Ball Super it certainly did a lot in terms of expanding the lore of the series, introducing the concept of the Gods of Destruction, the multiverse and the supreme god, Grand Zeno, most of all, it was all new material that hadn’t been previously hinted at. There’s nothing wrong with that, of course, and Dragon Ball SuperThe popularity itself is proof that the series was successful in its own way. However, it clearly seems like a new addition to what was already present – for example, the Supreme Kai never mentioned Beerus’ existence before Superdespite their destinies being linked.
By expanding areas of knowledge that have already been suggested or supposedly exist, such as the Demon Realm, Dragon Ball Daima is taking a different kind of approach. This allows new elements, like the existence of the Glind (the Supreme Kai’s race) in the Demon Realm, to be added in a way that feels very organic, like exploring something that has always been there but previously wasn’t paid much attention to.. The adventurous element that Daima it also reinforces this feeling of exploring what has always existed, and the Demon Realm is well developed.
Because of Toriyama’s involvement, these new elements of the lore carry much more weight than elements introduced into a series without his direct involvement.. It feels like Toriyama is elaborating on things he’s always wanted to delve into, but never had the chance to address in the way they deserved. Daima turned out to be Toriyama’s last opportunity to build Dragon ballof tradition, and he seems to have seized the opportunity with surprising enthusiasm, proving how close to his heart Dragon ball was.
Dragon Ball DaimaThe expansion of the franchise’s lore, especially when it comes to elements that have long been a question mark, like the origin of the Dragon Balls or the existence of the Demon Realm, is proof that Toriyama truly put his all into the series. .
Dragon Ball DAIMA is the fifth series overall in the action-adventure anime franchise. It features most of the classic cast members as aged versions of themselves, including Goku, Vegeta, and Bulma. The series was announced at NYCC 2023, with creator Akira Toriyama returning to manage DAIMA.
