Screen Rant Interviewed Mason Thames and Mel Gibson about Monster summer. The two reveal what they learned from working with each other, as well as why this is the perfect movie for families to watch during the spooky season. They also discuss how much fun they had filming the end of the movie, without mentioning spoilers.
Mason Thames was thrilled to work with Mel Gibson on Monster Summer
“He told me that Mel was working on it, and I said, ‘Oh, you don’t have to say anymore, I’m in. I’m there’.”
Screen Rant: What attracted you to want to be a part of Monster summer?
Mason Thames: I met with the director, and David [Henrie] Is the best man of all time. I mean, he’s so collaborative, and he just has such a vision for it. And he told me that Mel was working on it, and I said, oh, you don’t have to say more. I’m in I’m there. Tell me when.
Mel Gibson: Yeah, it was a lot of fun. It’s a little spooky. It’s a little edgy. It has a great sense of mystery, which I like the real aspect of mystery. And I thought it was a great buddy film. It’s the old guy and the kid together to find the mystery, and have a few jump scares along the way.
Mason Thames learned 1 thing he still remembers from Mel Gibson
“You can barely notice it, but it was everything. And for some reason, of everything, that’s one thing I remember, it’s the little things.”
Screen Rant: Mason, do you feel like you learned anything working with a seasoned actor like Mel?
Mason Thames: Oh, God, yes. Every single day, I remember, of everything, this is one more thing I remember, it’s less is more. Because I remember watching him, and he did something. He told a story in the movie, told a little backstory, and he had this little lip quiver thing. You could hardly notice it, but it was everything. And for some reason, out of everything, that’s one thing I remember, it’s the little things.
Screen Rant: Mel, what was it like working with this young group of actors?
Mel Gibson: Oh, it was fun. I enjoy working with young actors because I think there is an undeniable sense of truth that comes from them. They are not trying too hard. I mean, they’re trying, but there’s something unaffected about them. We all get, even myself, I watch myself and I get the easy shortcuts and the mannerisms and stuff that I have to always fight against. But they are kind of raw, like diamonds in the rough, and express themselves in a way that is just young and easy.
Monster Summer is the perfect spooky season movie for families
“It’s a fun little movie like Goonies or a lot of those old movies.”
Screen Rant: Did you figure out the mystery when you first read the script or was it a surprise to you?
Mel Gibson: I don’t remember. I think I read it, and then I knew that I don’t remember if I knew before or after.
Mason Thames: It was a long time ago, but I feel that what I loved about it was even reading it still kept you guessing and wondering who it was. And then there’s a fun little payoff.
Screen Rant: What would you say to families to get them to check out Monster summer?
Mel Gibson: It’s PG-13, so it’s kind of a spooky movie about a monster, about who the monster is, you know? And it’s edgy enough, but it’s not like a slasher movie.
Mason Thames: No, no, it’s a fun family movie. It’s a group of friends trying to solve a mystery, and it’s a fun little movie like Goonies or many of those old movies. I know I say old, and my mom’s like snarling at me like, “It’s not.” But it’s just a sense of wonder and mystery and spookiness that I feel like you don’t see too much. It’s a fun movie to go to with your family.
Screen Rant: When you read the script, was there one scene in particular you were most excited to film?
Mason Thames: Maybe some of the end stuff, probably. I couldn’t really get into anything because they would probably kill me. The climactic action. Can I even say that?
Mel Gibson: Dark, spooky, climactic shenanigans in a scary basement.
