In Matlock episode 5, Madeline Kingston’s husband Edwin (Sam Anderson) gets involved in her secret revenge plan. Edwin normally provides emotional support to Madeline, but he gets his hands dirty in episode 5. This development follows Matlock episode 4, when Madeline laments to Edwin that she is alone and needs more help.
Edwin’s assistance replaces Madeline’s previous assistance from Alfie (Aaron D. Harris), his grandson. Alfie assists Madeline in the first few episodes. Olympia and Julian kept their shared New York brownstone so that the children wouldn’t have to move during the separation, with parents coming and going, and the offer jeopardizes their plan.
The event puts pressure on Olympia to resolve her family problems. The lawyer was already dating her colleague Elijah, who leaves Jacobson Moore’s New York location in episode 4 after they broke up in episode 3. The case is close to home for Madeline
The case Olympia’s team takes on in episode 5 goes wrong, causing the lawyer to take a different path. Olympia team is navigating a class action case against a prison system after his guards are caught abusing his inmates. The team has to focus on the main plaintiff in the case, who was arrested on drug charges but has since been released and relapsed into drugs.
The case comes close to Madeline, who lost her daughter after a long battle with opioids. Madeline is the one who realizes that the plaintiff is drugged when they go to visit her. She reports the revealing behavior to Olympia, who wonders why Madeline knows so much about addiction. The team must rebuild the case after the complainant compromises her credibility, but they discover that no one wants to take her place. The other women who accuse the prison of abuse are hesitant to end up in the same position.

Madeline tells Olympia that her mother had a problem with alcohol in episode 5. Although the rumor initially could have been part of Madeline Matlock’s personality, she later confirms it to be true when comforting Alfie. The grandson asks Madeline why his mother couldn’t just stop using drugs, suggesting that if his mother loved him enough, she would have stopped.
Madeline explains to Alfie that her mother stopped using drugs many times, but that people with addiction disorder need to have perfect sobriety. The moment proves that Madeline tells Olympia the truth when she presses her about why she knows so much about addiction. Madeline says her mother was an alcoholic, covering up the truth (that she knew so much about addiction because of her daughter’s battle with drug use) with another truth, a lesson learned from Matlock the fascinating new character of episode 3.

Madeline faces an emotional obstacle
To obtain more information to win the case, Madeline needs to find her star witness. Madeline gets a tip about where she could be: a dilapidated building where people gather to do drugs. The septuagenarian courageously goes in search of his testimony. Still, it requires a little more emotional support from her husband, Edwin, who understands her feelings about her addiction and their daughter’s subsequent death better than anyone.
Edwin’s involvement comes as a surprise. Olympia knows Madeline will track down her plaintiff and tells her to call Billy (David Del Rio) and Sarah (Leah Lewis) for help. However, when Madeline makes a call outside the drug house, it is to Edwin. Her loving husband drives up and brings her tacos, so she has something to offer when she walks in the door. Even so, her husband is more present to provide emotional support and they hug before Madeline enters.

Billy and Sarah are Madeline’s colleagues at Jacobson Moore. They work with Madeline under Olympia as associates. Still, Olympia collectively refers to Billy and Sarah as “you two,” which they resent since their boss does not recognize them as individuals. When Madeline joins the team, Sarah sees her as competition for Olympia’s attention. Although Sarah has overcome the initial conflict, her jealousy of Madeline’s closeness to Olympia remains.

When Madeline leaves Billy and Sarah in the dark after Olympia tells them to wait for her call, they both become upset. Sarah doesn’t feel bad for Madeline since her actions delayed the case. Billy is hurt that Madeline didn’t treat them as a team, but understands when she explains that she simply forgot for the sake of her grandson.

In Matlock episode 5, someone who appears to be helping Olympia and her team is the villain. The villain’s twist is just one of the episode’s many surprises. One of the things Bates’ show does exceptionally well is twists, and there are typically several surprises per episode. In this way, the series built on what the original series established and expanded upon it to make it even more shocking.
After talking to her main witness at the drug house, Madeline realizes that the customer who caused her relapse may not have been a coincidence. Upon viewing the security camera footage, Olympia recognizes the new prison warden as the client the witness claimed was horrible to her. Although Olympia knows who she is, she doesn’t reveal it until the new director testifieswhat is a reference to the original Matlock and Griffith’s classic courtroom movements.

In Matlock episode 5, Billy and Madeline help each other with their love lives. After hearing Madeline’s story about why she forgot to call him and Sarah, Billy feels Madeline needs a partner to help her raise her troubled grandson. He sets her up on a dating site for older adults, asks her questions about her preferences for her romantic partner, and says he won’t post anything yet.
In an attempt to distract Billy, Madeline asks why he didn’t propose to his girlfriend, who he’s been dating for eight years. Billy tells Madeline that he grew up surrounded by women and never had an example of how to take the next step and propose marriage. In episode 5, we get a look at Olympia and Julian’s home life. Matlock features Julian and Olympia’s twins, Kathryn (Jordyn Weitz) and Courtney (Henry Allen), who have dinner with their parents at their home. After the children escape, Julian and Olympia revisit their argument about selling the house. The scene clarifies that Julian and Olympia are reconnectingand they have the opportunity to rekindle their romance. At the beginning of the episode, Olympia worries about the logistics of the move, which Julian helps with.
Later, Julian tells Olympia that he knows of other houses close to his children’s school and interviews a moving company so she doesn’t have to worry about logistics. Julian is taking steps to ease Olympia’s burden, which could have been a problem in their marriage. At the end of the episode, Olympia tells Juliano that she is scared because she doesn’t want to lose her family. The discussion about the move has opened up a broader discussion about Julian and Olympia’s future, and there’s an open door to rekindling their romance.

At the end of the episode, everything seems to be going well for Madeline Kingston. She helps Olympia win her case, which was a huge success, and she even manages to obtain a fingerprint from the company’s IT people that could allow her to access the Jacobson Moore email server. Yet, Matlock leaves a devastating loose end this could unravel Madeline Matlock’s personality. While it’s kind of Billy to think of Madeline beyond the workplace, trying to give her what he thinks she needs most, it’s a devastating prospect for the septuagenarian.

Of course, Madeline is not single and has a loving husband at home. But what’s most devastating is that Madeline Matlock is reputed to be Madeline Kingston, and someone recognizes her on the app and sends her a message questioning her identity. The move thwarted Madeline’s secrecy, allowing others to identify her. Billy has likely had access to Madeline’s messages since creating the profile, which means someone at Jacobson Moore may know Madeline’s true identity.
