On October 5, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa announced on the company’s corporate account at X what Backwards compatibility would be added to the Nintendo Switch successor, along with the continued presence of Nintendo Switch Online. The announcement comes at a crucial time, as Nintendo will want to prove that its next console can continue the success brought by the Switch. Implementing backwards compatibility achieves just that, ensuring that the audience Nintendo has built up on the Switch will be willing to migrate to the Switch 2.

Backwards compatibility is not simply another console feature, but an inclusion that serves as recognition of fans’ dedication to supporting Nintendo content and the company’s willingness to preserve these titles. Not offering this feature would run a huge risk of alienating the publicas returning players are denied an affordable way to play beloved titles, while new players may miss out on the opportunity to enjoy these classics. By including backwards compatibility, Nintendo ensures the retention of its fan base thanks to its open storefront of accessibility for players.
