Screen Rant Interviews Vance and Goodwin about what drew them to the series, their favorite Ryan Murphy show, and what to expect from their characters in Grotesquerie Season 1.
Vance and Goodwin always jumped at the chance to work with Ryan Murphy
“It was. That’s why he’s the man. He called us and we said yes.”
What drew you each to the series and did you want to get involved as actors? And Courtney, you’re also an executive producer.
Courtney B. Vance: Ryan Murphy.
Raven Goodwin: Ryan Murphy.
Courtney B. Vance: That was it. That’s why. He is the man. He called us and we said yes. If you get the chance to work with him… for the stage, when I was starting out, if you got a call from Lloyd Richards to do an August Wilson play, you knew you were going to Broadway and that’s the Same kind of thing. Ryan Murphy is alone in a class.
Raven Goodwin: Yeah, really. And then Nicci called me like, “Hey, I feel like you could play my baby.” She definitely reached out and made sure I was okay.
Is there a particular Ryan Murphy show that really stuck out to you and made you think, “I need to be involved in a project that he’s doing”?
Raven Godwin: American Horror Story. One hundred percent. I’ve always followed the show, so it made sense to me.
Courtney B. Vance: I’m a thriller person, but I’m not a horror person. So I’d say OJ did it for me. It became an event and was much the same way it will become an event.
Ryan Murphy asked Travis Kelce to join the cast of Groats Square
“Ryan called him, and Travis said, ‘Well, Ryan, if you think so.’
This is Travis Kelce’s first regular role. Courtney, how did he get involved in the series?
Courtney B. Vance: Ryan Murphy. Ryan called him, and Travis said, “Well, Ryan, if you think so.” He is such a lovely, humble and gracious person. And so when I met him for the first time, and of course he plays for the Chiefs, and I’m a happy person, so…
Raven Goodwin: It was a difficult time in Courtney’s life when he met Travis.
Courtney B. Vance: But we got through it.
Could you give a brief description of your characters and how they play into the overall mystery of this season?
Raven Goodwin: Merritt is the child of Marshall and Lois, and she’s obviously an adult, but she’s definitely inherited the trauma and pain of her parents, and she’s just trying to figure things out for herself, but she’s doing it on a Way that is childish and almost sick. We are a house full of weaknesses that take over our lives. Food, alcohol, and then we got him to the hospital. It’s just like a family going through a weird phase.
Courtney B. Vance: And granted, she is the way she is because of the way we are. If we were better, she would be better. I think families can identify with this. Everyone has something they’re dealing with, so we definitely have a mess.
Raven Goodwin: We let it consume us. It is how we want it to consume us.
Courtney B. Vance: Pray for us.
About Ryan Murphy’s Grotesquerie
In FX’s Grotesquerie, a series of heinous crimes unsettle a small community. “Detective Lois Tryon” feels that the crimes are very personal, as if someone – or something – is taunting her. At home, Lois grapples with a strained relationship with her daughter, a husband in long-term hospital care and her own inner demons. With no leads and not sure where to turn, she accepts the help of “Sister Megan,” a nun and journalist with the Catholic Guardian.
Sister Megan, with her own difficult past, has seen the worst of humanity, but she still believes in its capacity for good. Lois, on the other hand, fears that the world is subject to evil. As Lois and Sister Megan piece together clues, they find themselves entangled in an evil web that only seems to raise more questions than answers.
