Spinning off the events of Marvel’s game-changing “Gin War,” the iconic symbiote hero Poison is getting a brand new boss, and a brand new gold redesign to match. The main Marvel Universe did Heroes fight to claim the Venom symbiote, but its next mystery boss makes a major plan change.
There have been many versions of Venom over the years, and after rising to the heights of the new symbiote hierarchy, Al Ewing and Iban Coello’s “Venom War” means Eddie Brock’s iconic turn as the Venom boss and King in Black is finally coming to an end. What follows is Marvel’s All-new gift Series by Ewing and artist Carlos Gomez, and the title says it all. Not only were new details released about the upcoming book, but the new Venom showed off his different style in new variant covers highlighting the stunning gold-and-black suit, heralding that Venom’s best days are yet to come.
What Venom’s new gold design means for Marvel’s symbiote
The many aspects of Venom
Even with all the different designs Venom has sported throughout Marvel history, the majority of them have stayed largely the same. It’s easy to see why, considering Venom’s white chest symbol is about as iconic as a superhero insignia can hope to become. Even so, the role of symbiote boss is being fought between Eddie, Dylan Brock and Peter Parker, and a “poison war” on this scale means it’s time for a change. And with Dylan Brock becoming the most powerful Venom yet, the idea of a solid-gold, upgraded version is guaranteed to get the attention of comic readers.

Just as safe to stop Poison Fans read is the mystery of the man in the new gold suit, narrowed down to a choice between Luke Cage, Madame Masque, Rick Jones and Robbie Robertson. As Ewing tells PolygonThis shift in design is much more than a surface-level change, signaling a new style and behavior for this incarnation of Venom:
“Every page that comes into the inbox just looks fantastic. And I throw [out] Lots of new Venom configurations. Part of the “all new” of this all-new Venom is that Venom can’t fight like we’ve seen Venom do before. I’m just now writing some pages where Venom does some really wild shape-shifting, using the gooiness of the symbiote.
One way the all-new Venom is different is that it has a more heroic-looking Venom. I won’t go into the visuals, I’ll just mention in passing that there’s a new look for Venom. But before that, there was already a lot of agility, a lot of tens, a lot, like, crawling and slime and catching and teeth. This is maybe a little more of a solid venom. This gives us the advantage that we can pull off all kinds of exciting new tricks and fun new things, right from issue 1.”
Our take on the all-new Venom’s gold redesign
Venom in its golden guise may be the series’ best yet
If you look beyond the new color scheme in the variant covers, it is clear that the book is intended to make good on the name “All New Gift” in many ways. There is a built-in interest when a new person steps up as a new host to the Venom symbiote, no matter where they fall in terms of morality, fame or likely duration in the role. But with Ewing citing a more “tough” Venom than before, it’s possible that the creative shift could have a significant impact. After all, the Venom symbiote may be most famously associated with Eddie Brock, but it has a special love for true heroes (Flash Gordon adored above all others).
To learn who has the oversized tongue, readers will need to follow how Dylan Brock tries to uncover the same secret. But it’s clear from the candidates, and the not-too-subtle decision to cast the new form in literal gold, that Marvel is setting high expectations with All-new gift. The creative team has the chops to turn in a special book, let alone one to satisfy Poison fans, so it’s only fair that Venom should look as stunning (and “tough”) as possible.
All-New Gift #1 is on sale December 4th from Marvel Comics.
