Contains spoilers for The Immortal Thor #16!Most Marvel fans know this. Thor can fly thanks to his legendary hammer Mjolnir – but the latest issue of the magazine The ongoing God of Thunder series has revealed that he can also summon a storm to lift him into the sky if necessary. This new update expands on one of his classic abilities in a completely unexpected way, capturing the hero’s capabilities.
Immortal Thor #16, written by Al Ewing, illustrated by Ian Bazaldua, features Thor demonstrating that he doesn’t need Mjolnir to fly as he commands the wind itself to lift it when the hammer is unavailable as he hovers over the city while carrying the villain. The radioactive man moved out of the way of civilians.
In the past, Mjolnir was an important part of Thor’s ability to fly, and even in Immortal Thor No. 16, he admits that he prefers this method.

Classically, Thor does not fly himself, but is instead pulled by Mjolnir. By rotating the hammer, Thor can also generate currents that help move in a certain direction. In other words, with all his strength and abilities, Immortal Thor #16 demonstrates that Thor still has so much untapped potential.. Actually, Immortal Thor was particularly fascinated by Thor pushing the limits of his abilities. During this era, Thor could literally talk to lightning, power giant machinery with his divinity, and heal life-altering injuries.
When he flies without Mjolnir in this issue, Thor reveals that this power was granted to him as the “Sky Father”, which is synonymous with the All-Father of the pantheon. Instead of. Thor interprets this power as the ability to control the sky itself, to control and shape the wind. Immortal Thor #3 revealed that Omnipotence is also a “knowledge of history”, understanding that divine power in Marvel comes from history and that gods are shaped by the stories told about them. In the story, Heavenly Father should be able to control the sky, and so he can.

What’s nice is that Thor’s use of new abilities is also part of his inner growth. Immortal Thor. One of the main themes of the series was that Thor used wisdom and knowledge to solve his problems rather than brute force, and most of these “new” abilities are actually logical extensions of the classic Thor abilities that he came up with. If he can cause thunder, lightning and storm, he naturally should be able to ride on those same wind currents. Thor’s powers are limited only by what he can logically imagine doing with them, and Immortal Thor continues to expand its capabilities.
Turning Thor’s greatest strength into his intellect is a solid character evolution that neatly aligns with his growth as the All-Father.
Even Thor’s greatest loss in the series is directly related to his wits. IN Immortal Thor #10The Enchantress casts a spell that drains Thor’s intellect while he is in Midgard, forcing him to think in clichés and dumb one-liners. Thor’s only remedy against the Sorceresses’ ploy is the magic-absorbing belt Jolgyerd, which helps prevent this. Turning Thor’s greatest strength into his intellect is a solid character evolution that neatly aligns with his growth as the All-Father. With age and responsibility comes wisdom and knowledge, and wisdom and knowledge are power.
Thor’s New Power Is Similar to Marvel’s ‘Weather Goddess’, ‘X-Men’ and ‘Avengers Storm’
The two icons are more alike than ever
This feat of Thor once again puts him in direct comparison to another hero who can summon lightning and use wind to fly, Storm. Immortal Thor #4 shows a team between two heroesand carefully compared their powers, showing their differences. Team ThorWith thunder, lightning and wind literally speaking to him as their monarch and asking him to obey. The storm controls the weather in a less literal sense, but this does not mean that its power is weaker. After all, she is an Omega-level mutant, which means her powers have no measurable upper limit.

It’s funny that after all the time spent establishing the differences between Storm and Thor, Thor now does basically the same thing as Ororo. If he expands the definition of “Sky Father” far enough, Thor could theoretically be able to replicate even more of Storm’s abilities, although he has limitations on them. The question is whether these powers will continue. Odin may be dead at this point, but due to the cyclical nature of superhero storytelling (also a theme in Immortal Thor) and the impermanence of death for the gods, Thor may have to enjoy this power while it lasts.
