What happened in Dan Da Dan episode #1?
A controversial and wild start to the series
The episode starts with Momo breaking up with her boyfriend, and longing for her “Ken Takamura”, as she puts it. As she is wandering around school, she sees how a shy boy is being bullied and intervenes by scaring the bullies away. As she is leaving, the boy follows her and asks her if she is as interested in the existence of aliens as he was. Momo is on the opposite spectrum, as she believes that ghosts exist, and the two get into an argument. They challenge one another, and whoever proves their belief correct will have the other as a slave.
Momo goes to an abandoned building to see if aliens exist, and Okarun goes to a tunnel to see if ghosts exist. The two talk on the phone, and here they reveal why they have such beliefs, and it’s both sad and heartbreaking, to say the least. As it turns out, both ghosts and aliens exist, and the two are attacked by them. Okarun is possessed by Turbo Granny, and Momo is kidnapped by the alien race, Serpo. Momo struggles against the creatures that want to breed with her, but it is to no avail.

The anime greatly improved the source material
The first thing one notices about the first episode is the stellar adaptation and animation of the series. The action sequences are executed perfectly, the visuals are colorful and the playful nature of the series is shown through the expressiveness of the characters. The creative choice at the end to use an explosion to symbolize Momo’s potential feelings for Okarun was a neat addition that made the scene, and there are more such additions to come.
