Although Saving Private Ryan Has left a cinematic legacy in many ways, I always forget that this movie heavily influenced an emo music video from almost two decades ago. Saving Private Ryan‘s cast boasts so many big names that I’m losing track of the established stars in the 1998 war epic. There is no argument that it is one of the best war movies of all time, and Saving Private RyanIts success spreading so far beyond its intended audience is a testament to this fact.
Saving Private RyanThe ending still sticks with me all these years later, and that level of misty-eyed emotion translates strangely well into the emo music video in question. The band featured in the project is not unique in the use of cinematic influence in their music videos, but they are especially prolific for it. As one of my favorite bands, I would probably be a little biased in claiming that they are one of the best in music videos, but that wouldn’t be an unreasonable claim from an objective standpoint.
Saving Private Ryan was the inspiration for my Chemical Romance “The Ghost of You” video
MCR’s second studio album was full of hits
New Jersey’s My Chemical Romance took the world by storm in 2004 Three cheers for sweet revenge. “The Ghost of You” wasn’t released as a single until the following year, but it was accompanied by a music video that was worth the wait. As soon as I saw it, I was fully aware that the video was borrowing heavily from Saving Private Ryan. I’ve always found this song to be something of an outlier on the album, so its video also so uniquely felt very fitting to me.
Despite the different genres of the music video and the movie it’s based on, the coming together of worlds is strangely effective. Frontman Gerard Way’s haunting delivery of lyrics like, “At the end of the world or the last thing I see, you are never coming home, never coming home,” strongly evokes the emotions and mindset of what I imagine a solider might feel in the throes of battle. I still can’t quite wrap my head around the idea of bringing emo music and war movies together – and how well it worked.
“The Ghost of You” carries only a passing thematic connection to Saving Private Ryan
Tom Hanks’ war movie would have been impossible to recreate in under 4 minutes
Aside from the film’s signature aesthetic and overarching themes, “The Spirit of Her” borrows very little from Saving Private Ryan. But this is understandable. The iconic war movie clocks in at almost 3 hours long, while “The Spirit of Her” doesn’t even reach the four minute mark. Trying to recreate the entire story in My Chemical Romance’s music video would not have been possible in any decent way. However, I would argue that this makes the video’s instant and easy connection to Save private Ryan Even More impressive.
