Liam Hemsworth and Laura Dern reveal their instant chemistry in Lonely Planet
“I’m going to trust you and no one else to uncover and explore these parts of ourselves and each other.”
Screen swearing: lonely planet It’s a very sweet and deceptively simple story, but the audience really has to buy into the chemistry between your characters – and you showed it in spades. I know you can’t force these things, but your interaction was so natural. Do any of you have any tricks up your sleeve to warm up in front of your colleagues?
Liam Hemsworth: No tricks. No tricks in this regard. We had a connection from the moment we met and sat down. I came to this project because Laura was already a part of it; The opportunity to work with Laura was a huge opportunity for me and I was very excited about it. But coming into this, I had heard a lot of good things about her. She had just worked on a small project with my brother and he spoke very highly of her.
When we sat down, it felt strangely like we’d known each other for much longer, and there was an instant, trusting connection that developed over the course of filming. We never had to find this relationship; we had this connection and this trust and it was simple. It was a lot of fun to experience everything we did during this shoot. What a gift to be able to work with someone you have such a connection with and not feel like you have to sit down and talk through a bunch of things to get to the right place. There was a natural ease between us from the moment we sat down together.
Screen Rant: Laura, Katherine has a lot of baggage: she’s both a famous writer experiencing writer’s block and a woman going through a serious separation. What discussions did you have with Suzanne about the greatest forces driving her at the beginning of the film?
Laura Dern: I think it’s been clear that when you find that connection and feel seen, the intimacy is based on feeling everything you’ve carried in your life—not necessarily all the stories.
In a way, Owen meets Katherine the same way the audience does, and I think she really enjoyed it. We saw what Owen and Lily were going through and watched that lack of connection and communication get destroyed by how different these people are or how they don’t fully understand him. But here is a person who has fully opened up and says: “It’s all me. I’m not hiding anything. these parts of ourselves and each other.” And that’s exactly what we experienced, and it’s incredible.
Filming on location in Morocco was half the appeal of Lonely Planet
“We were just on this trip, on this journey, immersing ourselves in the culture.”
Screen Rant: The Moroccan setting is another vital part of the story, and you have to shoot on location. What are your favorite memories there?
Liam Hemsworth: Many! Chefchaouen was simply incredible. Chefchaouen is the Blue City and we stayed there for a few days, maybe even a week. We were constantly moving to different places, to very remote places and to busy cities like Marrakech, and just lived and breathed it.
We were just on this trip, on this journey, immersing ourselves in the culture and more. It was such a fun place to film and what a great place to film with someone like Laura. Old Laura, damn champ. Just a true legend.
