Jeri Ryan has confirmed that she has been offered a role in a spin-off series of Star Trek: Picard that wasn’t the rumor Star Trek: Legacy, but chose not to accept. The proposal Star Trek: Legacy would focus on Captain Seven of the Nine (Jeri Ryan), Commander Raffi Musiker (Michelle Hurd), Lieutenant Sidney La Forge (Ashley Sharpe Chestnut), and Ensign Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers), on the newly renamed USS Enterprise-G along with returning Next Generation characters.
Put TrekMovieRyan appeared on a panel with her Star Trek: Voyager co-star Garrett Wang and Robert Duncan McNeill at Spacecon in San Antonio, TX, and she was asked about the future of Seven of Nine. Specifically, she was asked if there were any plans for a Seven of Nine show, to which she responded yes. She stated that she launched her own show after Picard ended, although it was not Star Trek: Legacy. She keeps saying that she finally refused. Here’s what she had to say:
There has been talk. And there was an idea that was presented to me later Picard ended, which was not the Legacy Show that I know what the fans are asking for, what I want to do. But it just wasn’t me… It didn’t seem like the right kind of thing… But there has been talk. And if there’s one thing I’ve learned from this franchise, it’s: never say never. You never know.
What the proposed series would mean for Star Trek
Picard created a perfect spin-off
Ryan was vague about exactly why the series she was offered wasn’t right for her, but it’s clear that she would return to the role that made her famous. Ryan joined the cast of Traveler in season 4, portraying a former member of the Borg collective. After Traveler, Seven of Nine appeared in season 1 of Star Trek: Picardand as a member of the main cast in season 2. PicardSeven is a member of the Fenris Rangers, a peacekeeping organization active near the former Romulan Neutral Zone.
The end of Picard season three saw Seven taking control of the Titan (renamed the USS Enterprise-G) with Raffi as first officer and Jack – now a Starfleet ensign – as special advisor. The events in Star Trek: Picard finale are a perfect launching point for a new series and would allow for not only appearances from Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and Star Trek: Voyager cast members, but would also continue to tell stories in “present day” Star Trek. From the looks of it, the series offered to Ryan would not have followed through in the end.
Our opinion on a proposed Picard spin-off
Neither series is likely to happen
As good as a spin-off series Picard would be, there is a strong possibility that it will never see the light of day. Picard the third season was a success among critics and viewers, but Paramount seems quite busy with other Trek-related projects. They are currently in production at Starfleet Academy series, which has already been renewed for season 2, as well as the next Star Trek: Section 31 movie, not to mention the upcoming season 3 of Strange new worlds and a possible fourth reboot film. ONE Picard the spinoff probably isn’t in the stars at this point.
