ONE Game of Thrones the film is in development at Warner Bros., and they may have already found the perfect project. HBO Was Exploring Potential Spinoffs Even Before Game of Thrones‘ ending in 2019, and it’s just beginning. So far, one program has aired (Dragon House), and another will debut in 2025 (A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms), but there is much more to come.
Among the Game of Thrones The ongoing spinoffs are a show about Aegon’s Conquest and another about Corlys Velaryon’s great travels around the known world. With the original program acclaimed for its cinematic spectacle, it’s not surprising that there are now reports of a Game of Thrones film; in fact, Thrones producers David Benioff and DB Weiss even wanted to end the show with a film trilogy at one point. Presumably, Westeros would lend itself well to a big-screen epic, and one of these spinoffs would be a particularly suitable choice for a film.
Why Aegon’s Conquest Would Be Better As A Movie, Not A TV Show
The story is better suited for the big screen
The Conquest itself is a relatively simple plot: Aegon, alongside his sister-wives Rhaenys and Visenya, sets out to conquer the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros. Although the other kingdoms are powerful in their own right, the Targaryens have three enormous dragons at their disposal, making them practically unbeatable. So they move across Westeros, allying with some houses and forcing others to bend the knee, or destroying them completely.
The problem with this is that there is a lack of stakes and suspense. Not just because we know Aegon the Conqueror is victorious, but because he is so much more powerful. That doesn’t mean it’s a bad story, but since a lot of this is just Aegon’s victory, so I’m not sure there’s as much value in doing the actual Conquest as, say, a 10 episode TV seasonmuch less something longer. In contrast, how spectacular a 2.5-hour film – with an entire season’s budget – could be.
It could start with Aegon’s prophecy of the Song of Ice and Fire and then have some major action set pieces like the Field of Fire or the burning of Harrenhal. The first is one of the most brutal events in the history of House Targaryen, when all three dragons descend upon the battlefield, leading to the submission of the Lannisters and the extinction of House Gardener. With a budget of, say, $150-200 million, they could be among the most impressive dragon scenes ever shown on the big screen, and honestly, I’m drooling a little just thinking about it in IMAX, especially if Ramin Djawadi returns to do the scoring.
But it would also be fascinating to see the point of view of the people being conquered, showing it like a disaster movie or a true war horror scenario as they face the unfathomable power and fury of the dragons.
With a more simplified narrative, a film could divide its focus and work on a few levels. With the development of Aegon, Visenya and Rhaenys, we may get something that feels like a historical epic…just with fantasy thrown into the mix. But it would also be fascinating to see the point of view of the people being conquered, showing it like a disaster movie or a true war horror scenario as they face the unfathomable power and fury of the dragons. This would give the film a thematic richness and a concise, compelling story to go with the visual splendor.
A TV show about Aegon’s conquest could still work after the movie
The film could set up very well
An Aegon Conquest film wouldn’t even need to rule out the possibility of a TV show afterwards. The film could end with Aegon being crowned, Balerion melting swords, and the Iron Throne being created, which seems worthy of a cinematic-level event. In fact, when the Aegon’s Conquest spin-off was reported, it was mentioned that there could be a feature film alongside a TV show, so there’s certainly potential for this idea, and the attached writer, Mattson Tomlin, has experience in big screen with Batman.
Notably, he doesn’t conquer Dorne, and the First Dornish War is something that could actually form the backbone of a TV show after a movie.
The most interesting parts of the story happen after Aegon is crowned. Notably, he no conquer Dorne, and the First Dornish War is something that could actually form the backbone of a TV show after a movie. This would also have the advantage of finally bringing justice to Dorne, after Game of Thrones made a mess of his own Dorne storylineand give the conflict a little more substance, since this is where Aegon’s attempts to dominate Westeros really fail.
From there, I could continue with the remainder of Aegon’s rule, and then even his death and line of succession, telling the stories of his sons, Aenys and Maegor. This could allow for deeper exploration of important parts of the Targaryen dynasty, while the Conquest itself would be an incredible cinematic event.
Aegon’s Conquest Could Be a Big Hit as a Movie
It would certainly have mass appeal
ONE Game of Thrones the film is an intriguing prospect, but for Warner Bros. it also needs to be something that can justify and recoup the budget it would likely require. Although it is possible to do this on a smaller scale, if Thrones is heading to the big screen, so surely the goal is to make something epicwhich means at least $100 million, but more likely in the $150-200 million range. And if that’s the case, while the franchise is popular, I think there are only a few options that would have enough popular appeal:
-
ONE Game of Thrones continuation, with the return of the main cast.
-
Robert’s Rebellion, featuring young versions of Ned Stark, Robert Baratheon, Jaime Lannister, et al.
-
A Targaryen story with epic dragon action.
The first option seems unlikely and risky for the program’s legacy, even after Game of Thrones season 8 reaction. The second is possible, but it would probably need more than one film to work. The third is where the franchise’s interest already seems to lie – see: the success of Dragon House – and with that, Aegon’s Conquest is the obvious story to tell.

Not only could it work as a movie in terms of story, but selling it as one of the most important stories in the history of Westeros, the story of the Targaryen, and lots of dragons, would be a huge draw, making it a no-brainer if a Game of Thrones movie is really going to happen.
