Tommy Vega 9-1-1: Lone Star The Season 5 storyline was introduced by a former cast member. A spin-off of 9-1-1the Fox procedural was created by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Tim Minear, and focuses on the personal and professional lives of first responders in Austin, Texas. The show debuted to strong ratings for its first three seasons, before a drop in ratings in season 4. 9-1-1: Lone Star season 5 was renewed, which would have been the final season, and a departed cast member introduced a prominent Tommy storyline. In episode 6 of season 5, it was revealed that Tommy (played by Gina Torres) tested positive for breast cancer.
Put Weekly entertainmentco-showrunner Rashad Raisani revealed that Tommy’s storyline was introduced by former cast member Sierra McClainwho appeared in the show’s first four seasons. He shared that he and McClain remain close and that the latter pitched him the idea over lunch, stating that Torres was a special actor and how she would be perfect to take on such a big arc. Check out their comments below:
“She and I are very close and we met to talk about her character, but then she mentioned Gina. She said: ‘I think Gina Torres is a very special actress and she could take on an arc that could be even bigger. than anything we’ve ever done for anyone, with more depth and more risk. I mean, I don’t want to speak for another character, but what if she found out she had breast cancer? And I thought, ‘Wow, that was a genius proposal.
…it’s a way to start Tommy and Nancy’s final arcs for the series because, not to get ahead of ourselves, Tommy will have to deal with this monster that is cancer. This will affect everyone.”
What Tommy’s Plot Means 9-1-1: Lone Star Season 5?
The news will affect many main characters in different ways
Tommy’s positive result will have a major influence on the rest of the show and will begin its final arc. This is likely to have huge repercussions for Nancy, who indirectly caused Tommy to be tested. Her nude photo, accidentally sent to the entire police station, caused Tommy to notice a lump and prompted her to get tested, with Tommy also being tested in a show of solidarity. Although Nancy appears to be doing well as she tested negative, the emotional impact will likely be enormous.
Other 9-1-1: Lone Star Characters impacted by this news include Tommy’s twin daughters, Evie and Isabella. With his father Charles already deceased, having passed away from a brain aneurysm at the end of season 2, Girls now face the prospect of losing both parents in a short space of timewhich will no doubt be on Tommy’s mind. Then there’s the matter of Trevor, with whom Tommy has been romantically involved, and although they have agreed to call off their engagement, there will no doubt still be feelings between the two.
Will Tommy survive his battle with breast cancer?
All possibilities remain in play for the completion of the program
With season 5 confirmed as the final season of 9-1-1: Lone StarTommy’s fate is far from clear. All possibilities are on the table, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the show ended on an ambiguous notewith Tommy facing his cancer diagnosis while continuing to live his life as a mother, colleague and professional. This would be a perfectly fitting ending, with the message that nothing is certain and that life goes on regardless, with it being up to the audience to decide what the character’s future holds.
9-1-1: Lone Star Season 5 airs on Fox on Mondays at 8pm ET.
