In the films, Negasonic Teenage Warhead has the power of ‘self-detonation’, allowing him to channel and focus intense heat and pressure into attacks. In the comics, however, she’s capable of so much more – and her new power just cemented her “emo cred” forever.
In a preview for Teen Negasonic Warhead #1 by Andrew Wheeler, Eleonora Carlini and Carola Borelli, the titular teenage mutant is partnership with Deadpool to take down a man-eating pig in a rage. To do this, Eloise uses a new mutant power: the creation of portals. Negasonic Teenage Warhead summons a portal to a dimension of eternal darkness just as the man-eating pig jumps out at her and Deadpool – and the portal is shaped like a black heart.
Before being attacked by the pig, Negasonic Teenage Warhead is on the hood of her car, listening to music and giving readers a glimpse into her powers through the comic’s narration boxes. She explains that her basic power is precognition, that she can see possible futures and decide which one to pursue in her present moment. What Ellie explains further as the preview progresses is that each path she takes not only sets her future on a specific course, but can also alter the Negasonic Teenage Warhead’s power set.

Negasonic Teenage Warhead summoning a black heart portal to a dimension of eternal darkness is probably the most emotive power imaginable. But another key takeaway from this preview isn’t just that, it’s also how incredibly powerful Marvel is making Negasonic Teenage Warhead. The reason she had this power is that, in a future path that she predicted and chose to follow at that time, Ellie would gain the power to create portals, which would reverberate back in time to the present, granting her this power immediately.
Endless possibilities in the future mean unlimited potential for Negasonic Teenage Warhead when it comes to developing new mutant powers. And since she can gain her potential future powers immediately due to this “reverse echo” effect, she can switch secondary powers immediately. Her main power is precognition, and before creating the portal, Ellie had the power to alter reality. She effectively exchanged this power for that of creating a new portal. So what power will she receive next?
The Power of Negasonic Teenage Warhead’s ‘Black Hole Heart’ Is Perfect for Their New Series
This is the first time Negasonic Teenage Warhead has had her own main series, meaning this version of the character will be her definitive representation moving forward. While staying true to his past by keeping precognitive abilities as his main power, the comic has already changed his secondary mutation from altering reality to creating the “heart of the black hole” portal – and that’s an absolutely brilliant move. Negasonic Teenage Warhead doesn’t need to be a ‘discounted Scarlet Witch’, she needs to be independent with powers that complement who she is as an individual, and this new one does just that.
Seeing potential futures is depressing enough to justify his emo personality, and now, his personality has manifested in his new “black hole heart” portal-creating power, and it’s absolutely perfect. Although she has unlimited possibilities for future powers, this needs to remain for as long as possible, as quickly as possible.
