Actor James Marsters told Screen Rant that Lex Luthor almost became a completely different person in the film. DC Universe online. Marsters said he had just completed filming an animated film. Superman Doomsday where he voiced another Lex Luthor. Thinking he was called to the recording DC Universe online in the same tone, he almost demonstrated a similar performance in the game.
Choosing a tone for The end of the worldMarsters says he thought: ““It would be fun to play Lex Luthor in the spirit of Hugh Hefner.” it was very thin, slightly oily and at the same time charming, soft tones and trying to seduce someone is how I approached it.Luthor in the film was described as interested in Lois Lane, so Marsters decided to convey voice and tone through all of his lines, resulting in a detailed portrayal of the character.
“It was very subtle, slightly oily and charming at the same time, soft tones and trying to seduce someone – that’s my approach to it.”
Marsters was called into the booth to actually see the character he was voicing and I realized that I had misjudged the tone of voice. “I see a character rendering or layout and Lex is wearing combat armor and has missile launchers on both shoulders. I just say, “Oh, you want me to tweak this a little,” and they’re like, “Yeah, maybe a little!”The end result was a much more appropriate tone for the game’s gun-wielding Luthor.

The version of Luther that appears in The end of the world has a more human character. He always pesters Lois Lane, although, according to Marsters, not in the creepiest way. Against, Luthor in DC Universe online looks more like a robot than a person, charging into battle with shoulder cannons blazing. Marsters adjusted his performance to accommodate this tonal shift, going from the smooth, cool performance of the animated film to the more overt supervillain of the game.
What’s next for James Marsters?
Animation requires actors to be able to see their characters
James Marsters is currently working on a new stop-motion horror film. Abruptio, where he voices the main character. The film will feature life-size dolls. Marsters admits he didn’t get to see the dolls before recording began.
Basically, all Marster needs is the right direction to get the character right. The actor describes trying to “find” the right voice for Abruptio the main character, without knowing too much about the character, since the creators of the doll were still “find out“yourself.
However, sometimes it’s important to see how a character is voiced to avoid giving them the completely wrong personality. If Marsters hadn’t seen Lex Luthor’s rendering from DC Universe online, fans may have gotten a “charming but oily” voice coupled with a heavily armored and tied up villain from the online game.
