New Stephen King movie just turned a 49-year-old horror hero into one of his most terrifying characters

Stephen King’s latest adaptation Salem’s place Turns one of the first characters of the author into a terrifying presence. There are now several adaptations of Salem’s placeAnd each version made its own changes to the story and characters. The 2004 version, for example, turned Father Callahan into Barlow’s servant, while the 2024 version made Doctor Cody into a woman. Max’s adaptation of Salem’s placeBut, also turned one of the heroes of the story into one of the most terrible people in the whole lot.

Max’s adaptation of Salem’s place Made quite a few changes to Stephen King’s book. The movie cut quite a few characters and subplots, and so he had to condense the story quite a bit. It also meant that the two main characters of the film – Mark Petrie (Jordan Preston Carter) and Ben Mears (Lewis Pullman) – took on more responsibility than they originally had. While the changes and cuts may have contributed to the underwhelming reviews for Salem’s placeIt also turned one character into an absolute threat compared to their book version, and actually made them quite terrifying.

In Max’s adaptation of Salem’s placeMark Petrie is much more terrifying than he is in the novel. In the book, Mark was a very capable 12-year-old, but he is still a child at heart. He knew about vampires and the rules they followed, but he was also just as scared as anyone else would be in the situation. in max Salem’s placeHowever, Mark immediately went down to kill both vampires and humans without a second thought. Once he realizes what’s going on, Mark kills Straker, Susan’s mother, and several vampires without a moment’s hesitation.

There are really only two times that Mark even shows fear at Max Salem’s place. The first is when Barlow kills his parents, and even that moment was more about Mark’s rage than his fear. Afterwards, Mark is visibly distraught when Barlow is about to kill him in the drive-in, which is a moment anyone would have been afraid of. Otherwise, Max’s adaptation turned Mark Petrie into a terrifying killing machine, one that slays vampires and humans indiscriminately. He is an incredibly deep character, and the fact that he is only 12 makes him somewhat out of place Salem’s places history.

Mark’s fearlessness and ruthlessness in Max’s adaptation of Salem’s place would fit much more naturally in one of Stephen King’s more child-focused stories. Although the author is known for juxtaposing the innocence of childhood with his brand of horror, some of his works do this more than others. it, The long weekAnd Children of the CornFor example, have a main cast of mostly child characters, and Mark Petrie would be perfectly at home in these stories. Salem’s placeOn the other hand, is really about the city itself and the people who call it home, so Mark’s unusual intensity is not acceptable.

After the end of Salem’s placeWhen Mark and Ben Mears drive away from the city and the remaining vampires, their story is not quite finished. King’s novel had a prologue and epilogue explaining that Mark and Ben fled to a town in Mexico and were spiritually healed with the help of a priest there. The epilogue then revealed that Mark and Ben had returned to Salem’s lot a year after killing Barlow, and had set the town on fire.. One of King’s later stories, One for the roadShowed that while they destroyed the city with fire, they never succeeded in removing the vampires.

If the version of Mark featured in Max’s adaptation of Salem’s Lot had been around, however, he would have had a much better chance of surviving the return to space.

Apart from the fate of the site itself and of Father Callahan, Stephen King’s stories never revisited Mark Petrie or Ben Mears yet. Salem’s place. It is unknown whether they survived their return to the site, or if the vampires there finally got the last loot to escape. If the version of Mark that was featured in Max’s adaptation of Salem’s place Had he been around, however, he would have had a much better chance of surviving the return to the lot.
