Peanuts is perhaps the most iconic franchise in history, and there’s one main reason why: its characters. Peanuts Such an enjoyable experience.

another one Peanuts A character that has been a fan favorite since her introduction in 1966 is Peppermint Patty. She doesn’t care about school, she’s a fiercely loyal friend, and she always speaks her mind no matter what. In other words, Peppermint Patty is a great character among this kids-only cast. And in the Peanuts Comics published in September 1984, Peppermint Patty gets the spotlight – and she’s not the only one. Here are those 10 funniest Peanuts Comics that just turned 40!

Peppermint Patty gives the new kid terrible school advice

Peanuts – September 5, 1984

Peppermint Patty encouraging someone to sleep during class.

Peppermint Patty is a famously terrible student who is known for just sleeping through her classes, so it makes sense that she was held back a year. However, what doesn’t make sense is Peppermint Patty’s undeserved confidence in her ability as a student, especially when it comes to giving new kids advice. In the comic, Peppermint Patty tells a new girl, Eudora, to do what she does, since Patty has taken the class before.

The next panel shows the two of them sleeping in class, with the new girl following Peppermint Patty’s terrible advice to a tee. What’s funnier than Peppermint Patty thinking she can give anyone school advice is the sight of someone actually taking it. – and this hilarious wild comic strip has both.

Snoopy’s brother, Spike, has a tenuous grip on his health (and it’s hilarious)

Peanuts – September 9, 1984

Spike, Snoopy's brother, in the desert with his cacti.

Snoopy’s brother, Spike, lives in the desert after a traumatic experience with his previous owner. Of course, if someone asked Spike, he would claim that he would not live alone in the desert, because he is surrounded by his ‘friends’. His ‘friends’ are cactus.

The apparent lack of a pool in the desert is somehow the least of Spike’s concerns, since all the competitors are cacti. – Physically unable to participate in a race of any kind. Really, Spike’s grip on his sanity is spot on at best, and it’s hilarious to watch.

8

Peppermint Patty keeps giving poor Eudora terrible school advice

Peanuts – September 10, 1984

Peppermint Patty helping a classmate cheat.

While taking a quiz, Peppermint Patty reads the first question aloud to herself and Eudora before turning and telling the new girl to put “True” as the answer. Apparently, Peppermint Patty took the quiz last year, put down “wrong” as your answer, and got the question wrong. Therefore, the correct answer has to be “truth,” as Peppermint Patty says, “I never forget a fake“.

Of course, being Peppermint Patty, this ‘useful advice’ is probably another example of passing on terrible advice to someone who doesn’t know any better. Peppermint Patty sleeps through class every day – how will she remember the correct answer to a quiz she failed a year ago? There is absolutely no indication that Peppermint Patty knows what she’s talking aboutWhich is exactly what makes this scene so funny.

7

Marcie misses having Peppermint Patty in her class, but recalls the experience easily

Peanuts – September 11, 1984

Marcy pretending Peppermint Patty is still in her class by remembering her snoring.

Before Peppermint Patty was held back a year, Marcie (not Eudora) sat behind Peppermint Patty in class. In the comic strip, Marcie thinks back to the good old days when this was still the case, how she missed Peppermint Patty and wished she still sat next to her at school. however, The comic also shows that Marcie has no trouble recalling the experience of sitting behind Peppermint Patty. All she has to do is imagine the sound of snoring in front of her, and Marcy pretty much captures the whole experience.

Peppermint Patty’s entire school legacy can be summed up with a single snoring soundAs this is basically the extent of what she has to offer to the class, and to see that depicted through the eyes of her friend is absolutely hilarious.

6

Marcy Delves Deeper into the Imagined ‘Peppermint Patty School Experience’

Peanuts – September 17, 1984

Marcie interacting with the memory of Peppermint Patty.

Marcy apparently misses Peppermint Patty sitting in front of her so much that she keeps imagining the experience—as if Peppermint Patty had died, and Marcy just wasn’t ready to let go. Indeed, Marcie calls the memory of Peppermint Patty a ‘ghost’ (even convincing Franklin that the desk is actually haunted in a previous comic strip). In this comic strip, Marcy decided to interact with her friend’s memory, pretending to wake up the disembodied snoring sound Just like she used to do with peppermint patty.

Peppermint Patty isn’t dead, she’s just not in the class anymore, but Marcy seems to be going through a disappointingly elaborate grieving process.

Missing a friend is one thing, but Marcie can take it to an unhealthy level. Peppermint Patty isn’t dead, she’s just not in the class anymore, but Marcy seems to be going through a disappointingly elaborate grief process — one that hilariously borders on delusional.

Peanuts – September 26, 1984

Woodstock trying to kick the football at Snoopy.

The Peanuts gag with Charlie Brown about to kick a football Lucy is holding, only for Lucy to pull it off at the last second, is as iconic as it is hilarious.. However, this ‘football gag’ could have topped it. Snoopy and Woodstock are playing football, and Snoopy is waiting for kickoff. Woodstock takes a running start and kicks it with all his might…but the ball doesn’t bend. Meanwhile, Snoopy remembers why he hates kickoff so much, “My arms are getting tired!“.

The visual of Woodstock struggling to kick the football while trying with all his might to do so, only for Snoopy to complain about his arms getting tired waiting for himis absolutely hilarious. Maybe it’s not as iconic as the football gag with Charlie Brown and Lucy, but it’s easily just as funny.

4

Snoopy’s concern for the well-being of Falling Leaves is hilariously charming

Peanuts – September 29, 1984

Snoopy worried about the leaves falling to the ground.

one autumn day, Snoopy decided to sit under a tree and watch the leaves fall. But then it occurs to Snoopy that these leaves are in real danger by falling to the ground, as if a ‘horrible’ fate awaits them: being raked. Snoopy tries to warn the leaves about the dreaded “Guy with the grave“, noting that no one ever told them about it. Unfortunately, the leaves don’t listen, leaving Snoopy a stressed out mess while watching them fall to their impending doom.

The fact that Snoopy is so concerned about falling leavesAnd thinking that leaves being raked into piles and then bagged is somehow evil, is not just hilarious, it’s absolutely precious.

3

Spike finally found enough water for his race (just not in the most comfortable form)

Peanuts – September 22, 1984

Spike, Snoopy's brother, caught in the rain.

In an earlier comic, Spike wants to hold a swimming race with all his friends (again, cacti), but runs into a problem when there’s no water around them. In this comic, Spike gets hit by a torrential downpourEasy enough to fill a swimming pool, thereby granting his wish to have a swimming race. Unfortunately, all that water simply soaks right into the infertile ground, and the little that does not only serve to make Spike sopping wet.

There is really no way that Spike’s dream of a swimming race could ever come true for a number of reasons. And this comedian hilariously pointed out that the lack of water was not the main problem.

2

Sally is not the skilled poet she thinks she is, and Charlie Brown knows it

Peanuts – September 25, 1984

Sally writes a song about the setting sun, and Charlie Brown thinks it's terrible.

Charlie Brown walks up to his sister, Sally, at home one afternoon while Sally is working on her homework. She tells Charlie Brown that her assignment is to describe a sunset, presumably in the form of a poem. so, Sally gets right to work, writing a sentence that she believes best describes the sight of the setting sun: “The sun went down as red as a banana“. While Sally is clearly happy with what she’s written, Charlie Brown just walks away without saying a word.

The poem itself is so absurd that you can’t help but laugh while reading it.

Not only is Charlie Brown is disgusted by how terrible Sally’s song is Absolutely hilarious (especially since Sally thinks very highly of her own writing), but the song itself is so absurd that you can’t help but laugh out loud while reading it.

1

Peppermint Patty is put back in her old classroom, and Marcy couldn’t be happier

Peanuts – September 20, 1984

Peppermint Patty and Marcy in the same class together again.

It seems that the school decided that holding Peppermint Patty back was a mistake, and remedied that by moving her forward along with her original class. That means Peppermint Patty and Marcy were in the same classroom once againAnd Marcy couldn’t have been happier. Even though the experience was exactly what Marcie had imagined, she clarifies that Peppermint Patty Back is still great because “At least it’s new snoring, mom, and not reruns…“.

Perhaps the funniest part of this comic strip isn’t the fact that Peppermint Patty just keeps falling asleep during class (or Marcy’s happiness at hearing Patty’s snoring one more time), but the idea that Peppermint Patty was seemingly so disruptive in junior high class, her teacher just decided to move her forward to get her out of there—which was ultimately a good thing for Eudora. This comic shines a perfect spotlight on who Peppermint Patty is, which is why it’s one of those 10 funniest Peanuts Comics that just turned 40!
