Dragon Ball DAIMA introduced many interesting new perspectives on the franchise’s staples thus far, including Dragon Balls, Namekian origins, and, in its first few episodes, fusion methods. The series has already explored the lore surrounding Potara Mergers and ways to undo what was previously considered irreversible. Still, in the anime, another method is introduced in the Demon Realm. In Dragon Ball DAIMAthe Fusion concept gains a potential origin, or at least another branch in its history, as the Join Bugs are introduced into the Third Demon World of the Demon Realm, hinting at exciting times ahead for Goku and friends.
Mergers were introduced with notable early examples in Dragon Ball Z Namek Saga when Nail was absorbed by Piccolo and later in the Imperfect Cell Saga when he absorbed Kami. But as the franchise is quick to remind readers and viewers, Fusions are not exclusive to the Namekians, with multiple incredible techniques having different barriers to entry, including Potara and the Metamoran, also known as Fusion Dance techniques. However, with the Join bugs, There appears to be a distinct middle ground between Potara and Fusion Dance techniques in Dragon Ball DAIMA.
Join Bugs that may predate Potara Fusion in Dragon Ball DAIMA
Boasting similar conditions to fusion dance, but with fewer prerequisites
In Dragon Ball DAIMA episode #4, Goku learns about Medi Bugs, particularly the Join Bugs in the Third Demon World, with users being able to split one in half and share it with another user to fuse into a more powerful Siamese being for a limited time. This relative simplicity appears to be a more natural and consumable version of the Potara Earrings, but its effect is not permanent, with a vague time limit similar to that of the Fusion Dance union. However, unlike the Fusion Dance, Dragon Ball DAIMA never states that any Join Bugs user must first have similar power levels.
With its uses grouped with more mundane general pharmaceutical purposes such as healing burns, treating headaches, and treating skin, there isn’t much stock of Medi Bugs in the region.
With the Glind indicated to have their origins in the Second Demon World in Dragon Ball DAIMA and Medi Bugs are common enough to be cheap souvenirs in the Third Demon World, there’s plenty to gather from their first appearance. With its uses grouped with more mundane general pharmaceutical purposes such as healing burns, treating headaches, and treating skin, there isn’t much stock of Medi Bugs in the region. Perhaps this is due to the relatively low power levels of Demon Realm residents in Dragon Ball DAIMAmaking Fusion more of a novelty than in the Buu Saga.
Medi Bugs will appear in future episodes of Dragon Ball DAIMA
Glorio humorizes Goku’s request
Although Glorio’s reaction indicates that Medi Bugs are nothing extraordinary in Dragon Ball DAIMA, Goku requests a variety because he recognizes his worth, especially as an outsider in the Demon Realm. Join Bugs are one of several introduced varieties, including Achichi, Zutsu, and Beaut Bugs, which serve their purpose and can be useful in an emergency. However, they remain insects at the end of the day, with Shin quickly repelled by the idea of eating insects, even though they possess similar stamina restoring abilities to Senzu Beans.
Given the Demon Realm’s mysterious and far-reaching connections to the origins of many of the Dragon Ball phenomena of the universe, it is not possible to suggest that these Medi Bugs are connected to other well-known concepts in the franchise. Goku quickly compares Senzu Beans to Revive Bugs and the Fusion connection to Join Bugs indicates an origin point for what became the Glind-enhanced Potara technique of the Demon Realm. But Join Bugs also tease an obvious but exciting possibility in Dragon Ball DAIMA: more fusion variants.
Mergers are certainly in the near future for Dragon Ball DAIMA
Goku Kai and Vegolo in Horizonte?
Dragon Ball DAIMA Dropping hints of Fusion with the Join Bugs is a tempting move by the showrunners, hinting at the possibility of wilder combinations in the series. Shin demonstrates an understandable aversion to eating insects, which is why he and Glório show no initial interest in participating. Given the initial Fusion retcons from episode #1 suggesting that Potara Fusions can be separated by Majin Buu’s internal gases, even with Supreme Kais, The merger seems strongly suggested for Dragon Ball DAIMA future.
However, given Goku’s canonical fusions with Vegeta and the possibility of taking Piccolo into account, Join Bugs could produce exciting and, in all likelihood, highly strange unions in Dragon Ball DAIMA.
Dragon Ball DAIMA is the fifth series overall in the action-adventure anime franchise. It features most of the classic cast members as aged versions of themselves, including Goku, Vegeta, and Bulma. The series was announced at NYCC 2023, with creator Akira Toriyama returning to manage DAIMA.
