Star Trek crowned its most important captain of all time – and it’s not James Kirk or Jean-Luc Picard. Recently, in issue 25 of IDW Star Trek comic, the evil android Lore destroyed the universe, and now, in a first look at issue 28, the destruction has spread throughout the multiverse. Only a Starfleet hero can save him: Deep Space Nine Benjamin Sisko.
IDW shared its January requests, including Star Trek #28. The issue, which will be written by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly and drawn by Tess Fowler, is the fourth part of the “When the Walls Fell” story arc. The prompt for the question is as follows:
Lore has destroyed the multiverse and its fate is now in the hands of Benjamin Sisko. But after the USS Theseus reaches the Celestial Temple, Sisko finds himself without his crew… or any technology… on Bronze Age Bajor. The ancient Bajorans don’t know what to make of him: is he a terrifying threat or the prophet they’ve been waiting for? If Sisko wants to save his own life from the Orb of Destruction, he must first save himself…
“When the Walls Fell” has so far seen Sisko and his crew visit Fluidic Space, narrowly surviving an encounter with Species 8472, and a future installment will see them encounter the Kelvin Universe Enterprise.
Captain Benjamin Sisko saved the galaxy twice
Sisko fought the domain and a god slayer
Captain Benjamin Sisko, who led Deep Space Nineis one of the greatest captains in Starfleet. He followed the spaceship and its ragtag crew through some of the most turbulent years of the 24th century, notably the Dominion War. Deep Space Nine ends with Sisko traveling to the Celestial Temple, to live with the Bajoran Prophets. Just a few years later, in Star Trek #1, Sisko returned to our reality, tasked with a new mission: to stop those who are massacring the divine beings of the universe. Starfleet gave Sisko a new ship: the Theseusas well as a new crew.
When the dust settled, Sisko was instrumental in stopping the god-killer, who turned out to be none other than the Klingon Emperor Kahless. Sisko stopped the cosmic genocide, but in his wake, Data’s evil brother Lore rose to threaten all of creation. Using the same technology that was being used to kill the gods, Lore traveled to her home kingdom. Sisko was forced to watch as the android used the Bajoran Orb of Destruction to destroy the universe, creating a wave of chaos that now threatens the entire world. Star Trek multiverse – including the Kelvin and Mirror universes.
Captains Kirk and Picard never saved the multiverse
Captain Sisko now carries a heavy burden: saving all of existence
Sisko helped save the galaxy once and now he must save the entire multiverse.
IDW’s request for Star Trek #28 makes it clear: saving the multiverse now falls on the shoulders of Ben Sisko. Sisko and the Theseus the crew are the only survivors of Lore’s attack. Sisko and his crew must fight their way through the multiverse, seeking allies for the coming war with Lore. Lore wasn’t content with destroying the universe, he also wanted to remake it in his own image. Captain Sisko is the first line of defense against Lore’s plans – just as he led the attack against the Dominion. Sisko helped save the galaxy once and now he must save the entire multiverse.
And it is this new mission that makes Captain Sisko Star Trek most important captain and puts him in a league beyond Kirk and Picard. Picard and Kirk are rightfully considered two of the greatest captains in Starfleet. They saved Earth, the Federation, the galaxy, and occasionally the entire universe. Yet Kirk and Picard have never had a mission as grave as the one Captain Sisko now faces: not just destroying the greatest evil Star Trek universe has ever known, but also to save the multiverse from a fate worse than death.
