The only other major new release to land in the Top 5 is the Pharrell Williams animated LEGO biopic Piece by pieceThat debuted at No. 5 with $3.8 million, a disappointing start given the movie’s $16 million budget and 81% Rotten Tomatoes score.

What this week 2 cap means for Joker 2

The DC Comics sequel is in the works

The Week 2 drop for the Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga-led sequel is surprising, but not necessarily a surprise, considering the widespread negativity in Joker: Folie à Deux Reviews from both critics and audiences. In addition to earning a D CinemaScore, the worst for any comic book movie in history, it has a critic score of 33% and an audience score of 32% on Rotten Tomatoes at the time of writing. However, the result is particularly catastrophic given the movie’s approximately $200 million budget, which reportedly Put its break-even point around $450 million.

It’s probably only going to be able to break even if it keeps the same pace as the original movie…

At the end of the first week, Joker: Folie à Deux has only earned $121.5 million worldwide. Although it performed better internationally than in North America during its debut, it still had lackluster results overseas, falling far behind initial projections. It may not prove to have the same sort of steep Week 2 cap internationally when its overseas weekend is tabulated on Sunday afternoon, but its prospects are nonetheless grim, as it is likely to only be able to break even if it maintains the same pace. Like the original movie, which only had a 41.9% drop.

Our Take on the Weekend Box Office

Terrifier 3 is carrying the domestic market

Although Joker: Folie à Deux is crashing and burning, the Terrifying 3 Release shows that there is still hope for the October box office. Although its opening weekend is lower than Jokers, it is operating in a completely different sphere. To begin with, the notorious gore slasher movie has a more limited audience than the DC movie, even though both are rated R. Additionally, the Art the Clown movie only cost $2 million, meaning it has already more than broken even in just three days, becoming the latest 2024 horror hit.
