Notice! This post contains SPOILERS for Transformers OneThanks to Transformers Onethe franchise has just created the means for a much better team of Decepticons than has ever been seen before on the big screen. As seen in the new animated film depicting the origins of Optimus Prime and Megatron and the formation of their classic factions on their home planet of Cybertron, the formation of the Decepticons is very well done. It also sets up a perfect sequel for key characters who will serve Megatron going forward.
At the end of Transformers Onethe bot formerly known as D-16 motivates an entire group of disenfranchised Cybertronians to rise up against the lies that have long been told by Cybertron’s previous, corrupt leadership. Under Megatron’s leadership, these bots refuse to be tricked or manipulated again, hence their new names as Decepticons. To that end, it’s a far cry from the Decepticon depictions provided in live action. Transformers films, and an animated film sequel could go even further.
Live-Action Transformers Movies Have Repeatedly Failed the Decepticons
Very little character dimension beyond “Evil Robots”
Transformers is one of the most popular franchises of all time, and a lot of that has to do with the live-action films that began in 2007 by Michael Bay. Brought to life with a stunning mix of CGI and practical effects, there’s no denying that Both the live-action Autobots and their Decepticon rivals are really cool to watch as they continually fight on planet Earth. That said, the depth and dimension of these bots’ characters aren’t as strong when compared to human characters like Shia LaBeouf’s Sam Witwicky or Mark Wahlberg’s Cade Yeager. (and the Decepticons definitely suffered the worst).
The live-action Decepticons have very little personality or dimension other than being “evil robots”. Although there have been some attempts made by Starscream to usurp Megatron’s command as he does elsewhere, Transformers tradition, the dynamics of their relationship have never been explored in any meaningful way. While Starscream also showed himself to be a coward and Megatron gradually became more unhinged, the rest of the Decepticons only served to look cool and be “evil” as they tried to conquer Earth.. Almost no characterization is given to any of them, especially when compared to the representations seen off the big screen.
Transformers One is a great start for Megatron and the Decepticon army
Rising with much more depth and dimension
Comparatively, the lively Transformers One is a good start when it comes to portraying the Decepticons. In general, Transformers One is very focused on D-16 and how he became Megatron. That said, the revelation that most of the bots that became their Decepticons were once the exiled Cybertronain High Guard is genius, giving them a dynamic motivation to reclaim Cybertron after eradicating the corruption and lies of the past, albeit by brute force. and coercion. .
The rift that grows between Megatron and Optimus Prime is developed incredibly well, having been brothers who became rivals due to Megatron’s unyielding hatred and refusal to let anyone else lead Cybertron following the lies of the past. As such, Megatron realizes that power and strength are the only things that earn respect, which he actually uses to claim command of the High Guard from Starscream. To that end, this initial film became the perfect launching pad for a truly captivating team of Decepticons on screen.with the faction officially being born and growing in Transformers One post-credits scene.
A Transformers One sequel could flesh out the Decepticons better than the live-action films ever did
A sequel should have a lot more Starscream, Shockwave and Soundwave
What’s really exciting is that Starscream, Soundwave, and Shockwave are the three most predominant Decepticons seen in Transformers One. Visually similar to their first-generation depictions, the hope is that each of these commanders will receive future prominence in the near future. Transformers One sequence. After all, the groundwork has already been laid for why Steve Buscemi’s Starscream would be bitter towards Megatron, as it was originally his command that was taken.
“There is great potential for Transformers One canon and the future of the Decepticons, as much more can be done for the Autbots’ rivals compared to the live-action films…”
Likewise, Soundwave could be developed as a bot with lasting loyalty to Megatron as an important communications officer and spy with his legion of cassette minions. Shockwave could be the Decepticons’ dark science officer, conducting disturbing experiments while also being driven only by pure logic, so much so that he was driven in past continuities to usurp Megatron as a far more legitimate threat to his rule than Starscream could ever hope to be. . Anyway, there is great potential for Transformers One canon and the future of the Decepticons, as much more can be done for the Autbots’ rivals compared to the live-action films.
Transformers One is now showing in theaters.
