Peter Capaldi and Jessica Raine thank the viewers of The Devil’s Hour for their response
“I kept getting stopped and people not only wanting to say ‘well done’, but actually wanting to do it, which I was really happy about.”
Screen swearing: Devil’s Hour there seemed to be a large following right away, trying to put all the pieces of the puzzle together. How was it?
Peter Capaldi: It was great. It was a surprise. And it’s not because I had a low opinion of the show, it’s just that you don’t expect, you don’t know what’s going to happen with what you’re doing, whether people are going to engage with it or not. But the colossal scale of interaction was a delightful surprise.
Jessica Raine: Incredibly gratifying because we all knew it was a great show, well we hoped it would be, and then I saw it and thought it was great. We got an International Emmy nomination, which I was absolutely stunned and excited about. I was stopped all the time, and people not only wanted to say “well done,” but also really wanted to get into the business, which I was very happy about. Yes, it was fantastic.
Both Actors Praise ‘The Devil’s Hour’ Lead Director Johnny Allan
“You just have to play it out scene by scene and leave it in the capable hands of Johnny Allan, our brilliant lead director.”
Screen Rant: The Devil’s Hour feels like a mixture of several genres. Can you talk about playing with this?
Peter Capaldi: Well, I think we really have to give credit to Johnny Allan, our lead director, because this is a show that works with a lot of different genres, but one of the things that it plays with is the psychological horror genre. and so there’s a kind of uneasiness about it that I think is very difficult to evoke. It takes a lot of skill and preparation, and it’s really a director’s thing. So we’re very lucky that in some ways you don’t even know what’s going on when you do it. It’s like, when you see this, you go, so what? And then you feel scared. Why was I scared? I read the script, I knew what would happen. But then it’s a kind of carnival. You’re in a sideshow and it’s weird and wonderful.
Jessica Raine: That’s what makes it really exciting. I get bored very easily. I can’t do long-running shows. But that’s why it’s so nice, because it’s never formulaic. Really keeps you on your toes. It’s a constant challenge for me to play so many different characters, different Lucy characters, sorry, not different characters. But it is impossible to play this genre all the time. You just have to play it out scene by scene and leave it in the capable hands of Johnny Allan, our brilliant lead director.
Would Peter Capaldi and Jessica Raine change anything about their past if given the chance?
“If I learned anything from The Devil’s Hour, it’s that a butterfly flaps its wings and everything changes.”
Screen Rant: For both of you personally, if you could go back and change something, would you?
Jessica Raine: I think I would leave it. I believe there is no point in looking back. If I learned anything from The Devil’s Hour, it’s that a butterfly flaps its wings and everything changes.
Peter Capaldi: You change it and you think you’ll make it better, but you don’t and something else will come.
Jessica Raine: Things can get very dark very quickly.
Jessica Raine and Peter Capaldi detail what they were most excited to learn about Season 2
“But weird dad things start happening, and it’s interesting.”
Screen Rant: What were you most excited to explore with your characters in season two?
Jessica Raine: For me, it was the physical aspect of being really tough and doing a lot of fight scenes, running around with guns. I don’t approve of guns. I hate them. But I mean, it was so much fun to have capsules of blood in your mouth, get punched in the mouth, spit it out, swear, get into fights. I mean, Lucy in the first series went from being powerless and clueless about what was going on, very scared most of the time, to being very strong. Detective Inspector Lucy, she is much more reserved, cold and tough, while the other Lucy is also more woke and willing to do anything to stop this terrible crime that is about to happen. So yeah, I was really looking forward to diving into the cooler, cooler game of both of them.
Peter Capaldi: I think I just liked the fact that we had a much more intense relationship than here’s the secret I’m about to tell you. We had a much more pragmatic approach, we got along with each other, something like that. And also the beginning of a strange connection between them that we’ll likely delve into in season three. But weird dad things start happening, and it’s interesting.
Peter Capaldi compared Doctor Who and Hour of the Devil
In both shows he jumps through time, but in one of the two the set smells like latex.
Screen Rant: Peter, this isn’t your first time jump. How would you compare Doctor Who to The Devil’s Hour?
Peter Capaldi: Well, Hour of the Devil is darker. There are fewer happy endings in The Devil’s Hour. I would say there is also less latex smell. I always say that when I smell latex it takes me back to the set of Doctor Who because at some point everyone was wrapped in latex. There is always some kind of rubber monster around. The Devil’s Hour has less latex.
Jessica Raine: You wouldn’t want your kids watching.
