Scarecrow’s identity explained in Wicked & Origin before The Wizard of Oz

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Wicked (film/musical version). The musical phenomenon Evil Includes lots of twists and turns to get the classic characters where they need to be The Wizard of Ozincluding Dorothy’s beloved Scarecrow. Evil portrays Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo), the future Wicked Witch of the West, attending Shiz University, where she meets and is forced to live with Galinda (Ariana Grande), to become Glinda the Good. THE Evil The cast features many other colorful characters who affect Elphaba and Glinda’s lives in Shiz and beyond, such as powerful headmistress Madame Morrible (Michelle Yeoh) and fellow student Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey).

Fiyero, a rogue prince who was expelled from several schools before coming to Shiz, turns things upside down for the student body and leads Elphaba and Glinda to reevaluate their desires and priorities. Arguably, Bailey Evil The character is a carbon copy of Anthony Bridgerton, but plays an important narrative role by showing the profound effect Elphaba has on the people who listen to her and increasing tensions between her and Glinda. Furthermore, like almost all the characters in Evil, Fiyero’s story returns to Dorothy, although completely changing her Wizard of Oz counterpart.

Elphaba’s spell turns Fiyero into a scarecrow in Wicked

Elphaba accidentally turns Fiyero into a scarecrow, trying to save him during the song “No Good Deed”

Afternoon in EvilIn the timeline, Fiyero threatens Glinda to force the Wizard’s (Jeff Goldblum) guards to release Elphaba, allowing her to avoid capture again. Fiyero is later captured and dragged to the fields near Munchkinland to be interrogated about Elphaba’s whereabouts. Elsewhere, Elphaba begins desperately trying to perform a spell that will protect Fiyero from pain and death, being part of the dark song “No Good Deed”. Next to chanting a spell in the language of the Grimmerie spellbook, Elphaba says:

“May your flesh not be torn

Let your blood leave no stain

Even though they beat him

Let him not feel pain

Let your bones never break

And no matter how much they try to destroy it

Let him never die […]”

Elphaba technically achieves all of this, with the side effect of Fiyero becoming the Scarecrow.

It is established that magic cannot be trusted in Eviland Elphaba has had similar problems with spells before. For example, before stealing the Wizard’s Grimmerie and performing “Defying Gravity”, she attempts to levitate her monkey servant and mistakenly gives him physical wings. After this incident, she performs the spell as planned with her signature broom. Multiple Wizard of Oz characters appearing in Evil have somewhat bizarre origin stories like this, demonstrating the unpredictability of magic and constituting an interesting facet of discourses about power in this world.

Elphaba’s relationship with Fiyero and Scarecrow explained

Elphaba and Fiyero fall in love while he maintains a relationship with Glinda

Elphaba and Fiyero meet in Shiz, before Elphaba and Glinda become friends and Elphaba is still treated badly by most of the other students. Fiyero is a prince from Winkie Country whose family history is neither fully explored nor particularly relevant to the main plot of Evil. He immediately falls in love with Glinda, the two becoming the leaders of the popular crowd and inviting everyone to party with them. Fiyero and Glinda also begin a relationship, acting as if it is a given because they are both “perfect.

However, Fiyero and Elphaba develop an undeniable connection after they both play a role in the Cowardly Lion’s story. Evil origin story. She inspires him to be more caring, but expresses in the song “Not That Girl” that she believes nothing will happen between them when he chooses Glinda, his opposite. However, some time after everyone has left the school and Elphaba is on the run, Fiyero is much less willing to stand by as everyone villainizes Elphaba than Glinda is.

Elphaba and Fiyero then run away together, leaving Glinda angry and devastated, and creating resulting consequences for them all to deal with.

There is, of course, the added tension that both Elphaba and Fiyero have at least some loyalty and affection for Glinda, and know that their feelings for each other would break her heart.. However, things culminate when Elphaba returns to the Emerald City and Fiyero openly declares his dedication to her. Elphaba and Fiyero then run away together, leaving Glinda angry and devastated, and creating many consequences for them all to deal with.

Presumably, after Fiyero suddenly becomes a Scarecrow, the guards torturing him are completely perplexed and conclude that they will get no information from him and leave him trapped in the cornfield. They may also have left before his transformation, believing him to be dead. Dorothy then appears a short time later, when Elphaba’s sister, Nessarose (Marissa Bode), the Wicked Witch of the East, is already dead during the confrontation between Fieryo, Elphaba, Glinda and the guards.

Most would then assume that Fiyero represents the Wizard of Oz plot, during which he becomes especially endeared to Dorothy. After this adventure and encounter with the Wizard, Fiyero returns to the site of Elphaba’s “death” and discovers that she staged her death. The two decide to leave Oz together; Fiyero, in particular, emphasizes that they cannot tell Glinda about their survival to protect themselves. Evil ends on a bittersweet note, as Elphaba never fulfills her political agenda and is separated from her best friend, but manages to be with the love of her life.

How Wicked’s Scarecrow Origin Changes The Wizard of Oz

The Scarecrow’s motivations are especially intriguing in light of his twisted history

Fiyero/the Scarecrow’s arc in Evil It is very confusing where the events of The Wizard of Oz are worried. At least with the Tin Man Evil origin story, it’s plausible that Boq (Ethan Slater) wants a heart after allegedly being mistreated by Elphaba. However, Fiyero’s motivations for accompanying Dorothy as depicted in The Wizard of Oz are supposedly more complicated. For example, Fiyero knows the Wizard personally, as he served as Captain of the Guard in the Emerald City while with Glinda.

Wicked is a complex narrative from start to finish, requiring fans to dissect characters’ motivations at every turn.

Perhaps Fiyero thought traveling with Dorothy was the most discreet way to get across Oz, as he is now a known associate of the Wicked Witch of the West. Maybe asking the Wizard for a brain was a strange ploy to force him to admit he has no magical ability. Perhaps Fiyero, characterized as a good person, was genuinely concerned about a young girl wandering alone in Oz. However, any affection he has for Dorothy is complicated by the fact that Elphaba later imprisons and terrorizes the girl.

However, Evil It’s a complex narrative from start to finish, requiring fans to dissect characters’ motivations at every turn. Fiyero’s characterization is initially defined by superficiality and a desire for the same things as Glinda: maintaining her reputation and having fun. Glinda’s arc is about how her love of being adored by the public and connecting with people conflicts with loyalty to her friend and doing what’s right. Likewise, Fiyero is forever changed by Elphaba, becoming someone who seemingly accepts being a Scarecrow.
