Mogo the Living Planet was created by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons in 1985, in a short story entitled “Mogo Doesn’t Socialize” from Green Lantern #188. As his appearance suggests, Mogo is a sentient planet, and he has taken on many roles for the Green Lantern Corps. He served as a sanctuary for lanterns, sometimes becoming a base of operations. His primary purpose was guiding Green Lantern rings to new hosts and allowing the Corps to expand rather than Dwindle. over the years, Mogo has become invaluable to the Green LanternsSo his Red Lantern conversion is a devastating loss for them.

Although Mogo has historically been a Green Lantern, his allegiances have shifted after the events of Green Lantern Civil Corps Special #1. In this one-shot, Hal Jordan and John Stewart, joined by fledgling superhero star Sapphire, travel to Thanagar to expose Lord Premier Tharos as a fraud. Hal and John manage to defeat him, but in his final moments, Tharos channels his rage into Mogo and turns the planet into an unstoppable Red Lantern. Mogo now lays waste to every planet in his path, and only his Green Lantern teammates can oppose him.
