Screen Rant Interviewed Rolando Revello, Roy Dupuis and Nikki Amuka-Bird to talk about their new film, Rumors. They revealed what it was that attracted them to want to be a part of the movie. They also discussed working with Cate Blanchett and admitted that she is like the mother on set.
The script and the opportunity to work with Cate Blanchett led much of the cast to sign on to Rumors
“I think that if someone calls you and asks you if you want to shoot a movie with this cast, and this screenplay, you’re crazy if you don’t do it.”
Screen Rant: What attracted you to want to be a part of Rumors?
Niki Tumko-Poigl: I have never read anything like this. I think probably around me turning over the page and seeing a giant brain in the woods, I was like, okay, where do I sign up? I knew Kate and Roy were attached, and I was really excited to work with them. I was then introduced to Guy Madden’s work. I really didn’t know Guy’s work and I met him and found out how experimental and brave and imaginative he is. and brothers, Galen and Evan. It just seemed like an opportunity to completely jump into the deep end head first. That’s why I signed up.
Rolando Revello: I think that if someone calls you and asks you if you want to shoot a movie with this cast, and this screenplay, you’re crazy if you don’t do it. For me it is a miracle.
Roy Dupuis: Yes, I completely agree. This is a script I don’t see a lot of actors turning down. For my part, I have already worked for three days with Guy Madden and Evan and Galen, which were the three best days of shooting in my life. But that was another story, completely different from what we have here. What I prefer from a script is to be surprised, to be positively surprised. And that was it. I mean, it’s not very surprising to be surprised by a script that comes from Guy Madden, but I’m still surprised.
Cate Blanchett was the natural mother on the set of rumors
“She was actually the host country as well, so it fell in line with that.”
Screen Rant: What was it like working with Cate Blanchett?
Roy Dupuis: Well, the fact that it’s always the seven of us together in the night shoots the family, I would say. And it was obvious that Kate was the mother. She was actually also the host country, so it fell in line with that. But she was kind of the mother of the family from my point of view.
Nicky Amuka-Bird: Totally. And actually, she had her family join the set a lot. It was really impressive to see how she is literally juggling the roles of acting in the movie and being a mom. She has incredible stamina, and she’s also incredibly brave. I think it really helped, like Roy says, we’re all in it together, and the more you can take chances and feel vulnerable in front of each other and okay to take chances and fall flat on your face. I think Cate was the first to keep trying different things and not be afraid to look silly. It was really liberating.
Rolando Revello: Cate, for me, is one of the greatest presences of my life because she is so kind and sweet. All the cast, except Roy, because the worst I’ve heard.
Roy Dupuis: Sorry. It’s a Canadian thing. We are known to be really mean and not polite.
