Stephen King has teased a new Dark Tower book, but what could it actually be?

Stephen King released a new book in The Dark Tower universe, which raises the question of where the new installment could focus. The first Dark Tower book, The Gunslingerwas published in 1982 and featured the story of Roland Deschain. More than two decades later, King ended the series with the publication of The Dark Tower in 2004, which culminates Roland’s journey. He later wrote an additional novel, The wind through the keyholewhich was published in 2012 and takes place between the fourth and fifth books.

King has now teased a new Dark Tower book while he shared that he is “back to Middle World… and the Territories” and that, although he is not sure what this venture will entail, “It’s good to be back.” In addition to the eight novels and the soap opera “As Irmãs de Eluria” in The Dark Tower series, the books also connect to many of King’s other works, including Salem Lot, The position, The Talisman, Black Houseand The Dragon’s Eyes. Given The Dark TowerIn the vast scope, there are many possibilities for what the story of the new book could be.

Could The Dark Tower continue past the end of 2004?

This wouldn’t be the first time this happened

Since The Dark Tower ends with Roland beginning yet another search for the titular destiny, the new book could take place after the end of the 2004 novel. It could show what happens to Roland on his next journey to the Dark Towerthis time with the Eld’s Horn in his possession, or another future version of the quest, given the cycle he is trapped in. This could answer whether this time will truly be different for Roland or whether he will be trapped forever. the same cycle.

However, These responses could potentially undermine The Dark Towerpowerful conclusionwhich is Stephen King’s best ending. A sequel to Roland’s new journey was also attempted in 2017 Dark Tower film adaptation, starring Idris Elba as Roland, and it didn’t do well, as the film was poorly received. While King would do a better job with this type of storytelling than the film, it’s unlikely he would simply tell a different version of the story he’s already spent decades telling and bringing to a satisfying ending.

Where else could another Dark Tower book fit into the timeline?

The Wind Through the Keyhole Offered a Compelling Approach

With The wind through the keyhole set between Wizard and Glass and Calla Wolvesthe next Dark Tower book could also take place between some of the existing installments. The devastated lands starts five weeks later The Drawing of the Three ends. A new book could fill in the gaps of these five weeks, as Roland and his new allies, Eddie and Susannah Dean, continue their journey through Midworld. The main focus could be Roland, Eddie and Susannah getting closer during this time and before Jake Chambers joins the ka-tet.

Similar to The wind through the keyholeCould be a story within a storywith the majority of the book being a story from his past that Roland tells Eddie and Susannah. Most other books leave little room for a middle story. This includes The Drawing of the Three starting just hours later The Gunslinger, Wizard and Glass starting with the thriller Blaine the Mono from The devastated landsand The Dark Tower starting where Susannah’s Song ends.

More of the gunslingers’ history or the history of Midworld could also be explored, even before Roland was born, perhaps going back to the time of Arthur Eld.

There is more narrative space in the timeline before The Gunslinger. Wizard and Glass, The wind through the keyholeand “Little Sisters of Eluria” explored Roland’s past, but the new book could provide a more in-depth exploration, perhaps with more information about the fall of the Gunslingers and Gilead. There is a Fall of Gilead graphic novel, but it was not written by King. More of the gunslingers’ history or the history of Midworld could also be explored, even before Roland was born, perhaps going back to the time of Arthur Eld.

What else could Stephen King’s Dark Tower tease?

May not focus on Roland and his Ka-Tet

As there are many other books related to The Dark Tower, the new story could have nothing to do with Roland and his ka-tet and instead just be connected to The Dark Towerthe multiverse. This is a more likely scenario given King’s mention of the Territories in his tease, with the Territories being a parallel dimension that is important in The Talisman and Black House. Stephen King’s return to the Territories could result in a third Talisman book, and it wouldn’t be the first time he wrote a sequel decades later.

The next book could focus on one or both of Stephen King’s best villains The Dark Tower series, the Crimson King and Randall Flagg. The Crimson King already connects to Black House and Flagg is a villain who is an equally effective antagonist in The Dark Tower how is he in The position and The Dragon’s Eyesand would undoubtedly be well adapted into a new story, regardless of the setting. No matter what the focus is, for now, it’s just exciting that Stephen King is returning to The Dark Tower multiverse.
