The Penguin finally broke a villainous trend that has plagued superhero releases for years

In The penguinColin Farrell’s Oswald “Oz” Cobb broke a huge trend that has plagued several recent villain-focused superhero projects in both the MCU and DC Universe. Farrell first appeared as Oz Cobb in Matt Reeves’ Batman in 2022, introduced as lieutenant of crime boss Carmine Falcone and benefactor of the Iceberg Lounge nightclub. He represented a minor annoyance to Robert Pattinson’s Batman during his hunt for the Riddler, which meant it was surprising when the Penguin received his own HBO spinoff series.

HBO The penguin was a surprise hit for DC, detailing Oz Cobb’s rise to power and prominence in the criminal underworld of Matt Reeves’ dark and gritty version of Gotham City. In recent years, several projects in the DC and Marvel superhero franchises have centered on a few notable villains.including the likes of The Suicide Squad, Loki, Agatha all the time and projects in Sony’s Spider-Man universe. However, The penguin differs from these other projects, as Oswald “Oz” Cobb is far from being the hero that Gotham City really needs.

Despite being the main character of the series, Oz Cobb is far from being a redeemable character in The penguin. The series highlighted some of Cobb’s most likable qualities, particularly in his relationship with his mother, his bond with Victor Aguilar, and his love for Eve Karlo, actively showing his humanity and vulnerability. However, The penguin it also showed Cobb performing some heinous and treacherous acts, such as murdering Alberto Falcone, abandoning Sofia Falcone, and selling Bliss for Gotham.ensuring that he remains an absolute villain.

This is a far cry from a trend exhibited by several recent villain-focused superhero franchise projects. In the MCU, Loki and Agatha all the time emphasized the redeemable qualities of its titular villains and eventually turned them into heroes or antiheroes, leaving their villainous pasts behind. Sony’s Spider-Man Universe turned most of Marvel Comics’ Spider-Man villains into antiheroes, while the DCEU Suicide Squad the films have done the same with some of DC’s strangest threats. Oz Cobb doesn’t have a redemption arc in The penguinbut he’s still a complicated and believable character.

Why the Penguin Breaks the Superhero Villain Rule

The Penguin differentiates himself from other recent supervillains

The dark world of Gotham City in Batman informed a lot about how The penguin features Oz Cobb, as he was shaped by the trials and tribulations of his troubled upbringing and family history. The focus of The penguin it’s in the nuances of Oz’s story and character rather than turning him into a villain. We see him prove his willingness to do anything and throw away his morals to help himself get ahead, making him more complex and realistic, and somehow even making him easier to root for.
