The Addams Family Quotes help make the live-action films loved by many thanks to the witty and eccentric characters. The perfect cast, combined with expertly written scripts, helped secure their positions as two of the most influential films in pop culture history. Barry Sonnenfeld directed The Addams Family and Addams Family Values, with an iconic supporting cast including the talents of Christopher Lloyd, Joan Cusack, Dan Hedaya and Dana Ivey.
Actors Anjelica Huston, Christina Ricci and Raul Julia steal the show with their interpretations of the main characters Morticia, Wednesday and Gomez, presenting performances and dynamics so good that they are absolutely irreplaceable. The Addams Family The films became beloved for their gothic style, morbid sense of humor and scripts full of impossible-to-forget dialogue. The best Addams Family The quotes include humorous, dark, and often sarcastic looks at family and the world around them.

“I would kill for her. I would die for her. Either way, what happiness.”
Raul Julia as Gomez Addams
In the opening sequence of The Addams Family, both Gomez Addams and Thing are walking through the mansion when Gomez stops in the doorway of her room to admire a sleeping Morticia. He utters this profession of love as he watches her. The funny thing is that their proclamation of love turns dark very quickly, and it isn’t long before this first film shows that darkness and thoughts of death were normal for this loving couple.
The correlation between love and death is the perfect embodiment of Gomez’s desperate devotion to his wife and her morbid lifestyle. Both Morticia and Gomez love the idea of death as much as they love each other. Comparing his unwavering love to the idea of death, whether it was Gomez killing someone to show his love for Morticia or dying, was enough for him to exclaim that this was what true love meant to him.

“Unhappy, dear? Oh, yes. Yes, completely.”
Anjelica Huston as Morticia Addams
After she wakes up from her beauty sleep, Gomez checks on Morticia’s well-being in the most unorthodox way possible. Honestly, it’s not clear what’s more hilarious: his preference for asking about her unhappiness or the fact that she’s so happy about it. In true Morticia and Gomez fashion, unhappiness is the new happiness, at least it is for this creepy and eccentric Addams Family couple.
This is a perfect description of why this family acts the way they do. It has become almost common to see characters like Wednesday Addams talking about being unhappy, but that is the state she wants to be in. This was clearly passed down from her mother, as Morticia seems to have a happy, contented glow when she is completely unhappy, as this is how this strange and demented family chooses to live their lives.

“Dear Mia”
Raul Julia as Gomez Addams
This Italian term of endearment was first uttered in the first act of The Addams Family and is reused numerous times throughout the series. “Dear my” –which translates to “my dear“-is Gomez’s preferred nickname for Morticia. Typically, she responds in French right before they smother each other with kisses. This is something fans have come to expect from Morticia and Gomez. Although they are dark and love death, they are madly in love .
They often outwardly show their love to an almost embarrassing degree, but it is so normal that it never actually embarrasses their children or other family members. However, it often feels a little overwhelming to people who don’t know them, especially because it’s often so shocking compared to the dark and morbid attitudes they normally have at all times. Seeing this eccentric couple have pet names for each other is still endearing.

“I wish I had enough time to seek out the dark forces and join the infernal crusade.”
Anjelica Huston as Morticia Addams
When Gomez checks in on Morticia to see how she’s dealing with the stress of having a third child, she confesses that she’s bothered by something, but not exactly what he expects. This statement is Morticia’s way of saying she wants to have her cake and eat it too. Of course, Morticia’s cake is a little darker than most. The idea of Morticia Addams having another child was a big part of the plot, but it also seemed to take her out of much of the story’s action.
At the same time, this quote really shows the “fun” side.
As most fans know, Morticia is someone who loves exploring her dark side, and while she’s pregnant, that’s not possible. Of course, Morticia would probably try anyway despite the dangers, but that’s what makes her such an interesting and unpredictable character. At the same time, this quote really shows the “fun“side, as it’s easy to imagine her joining the forces of darkness and heading towards what she might consider a”hellish crusade.”

“You scared me. Do it again.”
Anjelica Huston as Morticia Addams
This scene is an example of the playful dynamic between Morticia and Gomez, who are known for their intense flirting throughout the film. Addams Family films. When Morticia sees her husband spiraling downward, it scares her, but she doesn’t seem to care. In fact, she quite likes it. Even when there is mortal danger, Morticia and Gomez Addams are involved.
While The Addams Family is primarily a comedy, it also draws from the world of horror, and this quote from Morticia shows the playful part of horror films and TV shows. The whole purpose of horror movies and haunted houses is to create scary experiences for people who find them entertaining. It seems a haunted house might be boring for Morticia and Gomez, but a trip through a real haunted cemetery might be more up to their standards. This quote shows that Morticia would at least be willing to do that.

“Is this for your brother? I don’t think so.”
Anjelica Huston as Morticia Addams
Wednesday and Morticia have a mother-daughter bond like no other. Morticia encourages Wednesday to stay true to herself and supports her in everything she does. This quote proves it. As Morticia pours out her heart to her mother at the kitchen table, Wednesday walks by in the background with a kitchen knife, much to her mother’s displeasure.
But it’s not the fact that Wednesday is threatening to stab her brother that worries her, just the choice of weapon. After confiscating the knife, she hands Wednesday a larger one. This is also a big joke as it promotes sibling rivalry even though Pugsley is the smallest and least threatening of the children. But ultimately, it’s a matter of survival of the fittest, and Morticia and Gomez know they need to raise their children to be tough, even if they use deadly weapons.

“Our lifeless bodies rotting together for all eternity.”
Anjelica Huston as Morticia Addams
This profession of love is one of the most romantic quotes in the entire franchise. In The Addams Family, Morticia and Gomez sit together in their cemetery under a moonlit sky. The intimate setting inspires fond memories of the couple’s first date, and the two fantasize about the afterlife. When Morticia talks about the idea of the two of them rotting together into identical corpses, she’s saying that not even death can keep them apart.
This really shows the couple’s morbid romance, which for them is very romantic, but for others it would be disturbing and possibly traumatic. For most people, being together forever, even after death, may be a romantic ideal. However, moving on to the true perspective of this, since the two bodies will rot together, it is still part of the original idea of being together forever, even though it is much ruder to think about it in this situation.

“Boys?” “Murder.”
Christina Ricci as Wednesday Addams
While Morticia will spend Wednesday at camp in The Addams Family Valuesthey meet Amanda and Ellen Buckman, a mother-daughter duo who are the exact opposite of them. When Morticia tells Ellen that Wednesday only has “one thing on her mind,” Ellen mistakenly assumes they are boys. Wednesday doesn’t hesitate to correct her, saying it’s murder instead. Mrs. Buckman tries to hide her discomfort, but Wednesday doesn’t care.
She knows she’s not like most girls her age and that doesn’t bother her at all. This is also funny when looking at the upcoming Netflix series Wednesday. In the first season, there was a big spotlight on Wednesday and a possible love interest. However, since Jenna Ortega is also a producer on the series, she emphasized that there shouldn’t be any romantic subplots in season two, which easily relates to Wednesday not caring about boys when murder is on the menu.

“Imagine, darling, if Fester came back. Half alive, almost human. A rotten husk.” “Don’t tease.”
Raul Julia as Gomez Addams and Anjelica Huston as Morticia Addams
This is another example of the incredible on-screen chemistry between Anjelica Huston and Raul Julia that made audiences fall in love with Gomez and Morticia. In The Addams Family, as Morticia cuts her red roses, she tries to offer Gomez grim reassurance about her missing brother.. When they propose the idea of resurrecting him as a decaying undead corpse, Gomez finds the idea intriguing. Gomez wants her brother back, and while it’s an interesting idea, the immediate direction the conversation takes can only be followed by Morticia and Gomez.
Seeing Fester rise from the dead as a rotting, almost human corpse sounds horrible, but for this couple it’s fascinating and something they realize they’d love to see.. The quote is even better because Morticia is cutting down the roses and keeping only the thorns when she says it.
16
“That poor girl.”
Raul Julia as Gomez Addams
The late Raul Julia was a masterful Gomez. There hasn’t been a live-action Gomez Addams like him since. A scene-stealer, he delivered lines like no other, with a passion and ferocity that felt natural. This scene was a prime example of his incredible delivery. When Gomez lifts the top of a life-size cake and finds nothing but steam inside, it’s clear he was expecting a surprised guest, but Lurch apparently made the cake with her inside.
One of the many charms of The Addams Family is the way everyone moves forward, completely unfazed. This is a terrifying moment, with the woman in the cake dying a horrible death, but Gomez’s whole nonchalant response to the death is funny, and the fact that no one seems to care that anyone died makes it all the better. These moments are quick, passing jokes so that people don’t stop to think about how terrible that moment really was.

“The human spirit is a hard thing to kill.” “Even with a chainsaw.”
Judith Malina as Grandma Addams
When a skeptical Wednesday questions the news of her uncle’s return from the Bermuda Triangle, the fake Dr. Greta Pinder-Schloss (later revealed to be con artist Abigail Craven) tries to dissuade her. When she tells Wednesday that the human spirit is difficult to kill, Grandma signs it in a way that implies that she knows this for sure. Knowing the Addams family, it wouldn’t be surprising.
It’s rare to get many great quotes from Grandma, which is disappointing since there were so many wonderful attempts at humor from the character. Judith Malina plays Grandma in the first Addams Family film, and his quotes are rare and usually improvised in response to other people’s quotes. However, the legendary Carol Kane replaced Malina in the second film, and the character gained much more attention, although this was still her best line from both films.

“All I can forgive, but, Debbie, pastries?”
Anjelica Huston as Morticia Addams
Upon realizing that Debbie Jellinsky (Joan Allen) has become a negative influence on her brother-in-law, Morticia doesn’t even blink. It’s clear that Morticia has no qualms with bad intentions, and even when she knows someone is doing something to hurt Fester, it doesn’t bother her because Fester can take care of himself. However, she couldn’t leave Fester’s house without letting Debbie know how tacky her choice of home decor was.
The whole moment was great because Morticia was disturbed by the tacky decor of the house, not caring about anything else. It also shows that perhaps Morticia wanted to find a way to attack Debbie and decided that insulting her home and her taste was the best way to bet on the woman’s skin, since she clearly didn’t care that she was hurting Fester. Only the great Anjelica Huston could make such a mischievous line come out so gracefully.
13
“Children.”
Raul Julia as Gomez Addams
As unorthodox as they may be, Morticia and Gomez are amazing parents. This scene gives us an example of their loving bond. As the family prepares for a séance, Pugsley unexpectedly pulls out a meat cleaver. Gomez catches him in the act and confiscates the gun, and Pugsley responds with an innocent giggle. The way Gomez downplays the entire situation is a reflection of her passive parenting style and her strong adoration for her children, who would never do wrong in her eyes.
Just like Morticia did before with Wednesday, who was grabbing a knife to attack her brother, only to have her give a bigger knife to her daughter, this was Gomez playing the same game with Pugsley. The kids clearly want to try and kill each other, mostly as a deadly gameand the fact that his parents are proud of his attempts makes the moments even funnier, in a rather disturbing way.
12
“No calls. No worries. No survivors.”
Anjelica Huston as Morticia Addams
A running joke throughout Addams Family movies is the memory of Morticia and Gomez’s honeymoon. In this scene, as Gomez grows weary of her brother’s well-being, Morticia recalls a honeymoon cruise where there were no calls, worries, or “survivors.” There are many reasons why a couple would find their honeymoon relaxing and memorable. Not having anyone bother them or call them is a big reason. Another is the idea of not worrying about anything other than having fun.
The idea that the honeymoon cruise also returned without “survivors” offers a story that the films never went into detail about.
Those are two things Morticia mentions here, but there’s something else that brings up something quite sinister.. The idea that the honeymoon cruise also returned without “survivors” offers a story that the films never go into detail about. Plus, the fact that Morticia considers this one of the highlights fits her character perfectly. This horrible memory would bother most couples, but not the Addamses – they were quite pleased with the result.
11
“What do you say?” “Now.”
Anjelica Huston as Morticia Addams and Christina Ricci as Wednesday Addams
THE Addams Family the dynamic is hilariously unique. This scene with Wednesday and his uncle Fester shows this beautifully. During Fester’s first breakfast with the Addamses, Wednesday asks him to pass her the salt. Morticia follows with “What do you say?“In response, Wednesday responds rudely”Now.“The rude and assertive follow-up to such an initially sweet request is so unexpected that it’s funny.
It’s unclear if this is the correct response Morticia was looking for, but seeing her asking her daughter to say “please” seems out of character, so this could be the exact response she wanted to hear, as she clearly has. raised her daughter to go after what she wants. Either way, seeing Wednesday acting so rude and rude and then seeing Uncle Fester meekly pass her the salt shaker was perfect for the whole family dynamic here.
10
“Excuse me. Second honeymoon.”
Raul Julia as Gomez Addams
In this scene, Morticia and Gomez can’t keep their hands off each other as memories of their visit to the Bermuda Triangle send them down memory lane, seemingly oblivious to the world around them. After releasing a list of deadly locations that include Devil’s Island and the Black Hole of Calcutta, the couple politely excuse themselves.
What makes this scene so incredible is that the entire franchise has shown how demented Gomez and Morticia’s love story is and full of dark, morbid fantasies. They seek to love each other until death. They have fantasies of rotting together in their graves after they die. They also show here that they find excitement in the darkest subjects, and when talking about places of tragedy and unnatural deaths, the two feel the need to rush out for a romantic moment.

“I believe they have–” “Gomez, no!” “–A Buick!”
Raul Julia as Gomez Addams and Anjelica Huston as Morticia Addams
When Gomez rushes to a local police station to report Debbie’s lying and manipulative ways, he presents a list of reasonable causes for which she should be arrested, except that none of the excuses actually seem harmful or criminal. He demands that the police do something about Debbie’s marriage to his brother. The police seem unconcerned about the marriage, and then he admits that she took him to Hawaii and then moved into a big house where they make love constantly.
At worst, he demands that the police officer issue a subpoena for Debbie to buy, to which Morticia looks horrified, a Buick. It’s hilariously left of field, and Huston’s performance only adds to the magic. The best part of this is that Nathan Lane showed up as a police sergeant, and his reaction to all the complaining was mock disgust. However, it’s clear that he’s just humoring these strange people until Gomez openly insults him, which gets the entire family arrested.

“Would you die for me? Promise?”
Joan Cusack as Debbie Jellinsky
On their wedding night, gold-digger Debbie begins planning Fester’s downfall in an attempt to steal his money. It becomes clear that she is up to no good when she picks up the radio chord and approaches the bathtub. After he promises to die for her, she tests this theory by throwing the radio into the bathtub in an attempt to electrocute him. Little did she know that a little brush with death isn’t enough to take down an Addams.
The plan backfires and she ends up with a happy, smiling Fester, much to her disdain. One of the running jokes is that Fester has the power of electricity and can even put a light bulb in his mouth and turn it on, which he does here. If Debbie wanted to kill him, she chose one of the worst ways to do it. However, the whole intro with him promising he would die for her leads to the joke where she says, “Pumpkin”, only to see him grinning horribly with the light bulb in his mouth.

“Cyanide? Rotting, like we’re done.”
Anjelica Huston as Morticia Addams
As Morticia tries to help Fester unpack, she comes across a group of peculiar items, most of which are deadly weapons. As she takes out the items one by one, she stops suddenly when she sees a glass bottle. This bottle contains the deadly poison cyanide, which would scare most. Instead, Morticia turns away, amused by Fester’s audacity in daring to think he would be without such an essential ingredient.
The best part of this quote is that none of the weapons Uncle Fester carries causes Morticia any kind of suspicion. This is especially troubling because this isn’t the real Uncle Fester, but rather an “imposter” named Gordon, who brought many weapons to use against the Addamses as he and his “mother” tried to steal their fortune. The idea that she thinks all guns are normal and that cyanide is just normal is part of the joke.

“It’s called ‘Is There a God?'”
Christina Ricci as Wednesday Addams
While Wednesday and Pugsley go about their daily routine of decapitating toys in the attic, Wednesday tries to persuade Pugsley to sit in his electric chair, telling him that they are going to play. Ever the gullible Addams, Pugsley sits down in the chair excitedly, not knowing what to expect. When Pugsley innocently asks Wednesday what game they are going to play, she ties him up and coldly replies, “Is there a god?“
The big joke in the first film was Wednesday and Pugsley trying to kill each other in random ways. However, it was Wednesday’s more dangerous games and threats that really stole the show. Putting her little brother in an electric chair and basically telling her she’s going to kill him might be the best of these dangerous games. It was a great way to end this joke, although neither of the kids took it to the extreme of actually killing each other.
