Baldur’s Gate 3 is exceptional in many ways, from the combat to the NPCs and the depth of their stories. However, there is an unexpected disappointment early in the game when Tav, the default name for a custom character, is used as the main character, rather than an Origin character, with the exception of Dark Urge. Character creation options are limited, making Tav’s customization pointless compared to the rest of the game, meaning your best bet may be to look for mods to complement your existing creation options.
The modding community, as always, responded quickly and began creating content for Baldur’s Gate 3. Although modders usually post ways to support them with donations, downloading and using mods is almost always free. So below are some of the best free mods that you can use to create the perfect Tawa, fixing the lackluster character creation options included in BG3. Don’t forget save files as backups before modding in case of conflicts, so as not to lose progress.

The best part about the mod is that while it caters to humans, half-elves, elves, drow, and tieflings, it covers the territory fairly evenly, with enough options for each body type. This is a good choice for those who simply want more features without rocking the boat for any serious reasons.

Trips Accessories Collection
Glasses and piercings galore
The Whispers of the Divine Aasimar mod is not the only wonderful creation Tripswhich is also the source and namesake of the Trips accessory collection. Although Baldur’s Gate 3 has a lot of accessories that can be found throughout the game in the amulets and rings categories, there aren’t many in other departments.
The Trips accessory collection includes character face options, adding a choice of piercings along with a monocle and round glasses. A pair of piercings can be further adorned with gemstones to give them a truly unique look. Most importantly, the accessories are designed to behave correctly during facial animation, so no weird clippings should ruin the immersion when Tav with the lip ring makes a face at something.

Hair Salon Tawa
Adds new hairstyle options
Of all the character customization options available in BG3hairstyles may be the most common. However, many of the default styles are quite similar, and the long hair options are quite lackluster, without many options for back-tied hair or shoulder-length hair. Bye Tawa Hair Salon, uploaded to Nexus Mods by user Toriadds dozens of new hairstyle options, the downside is This mainly applies to elf, human, and tiefling characters with body types 1 and 2..

Faces of Faerûn
Provides more faces by default
Unlike hairstyles, there are far fewer options for faces when creating a character. Each race only has eight default face options, and this is particularly limiting to the design as it is not possible to change individual facial features such as the eyes or nose, which is commonly seen in character creation systems for other games.

Nexus Mod User Aloia created Faces of Faerûn, which helps somewhat by adding more face options. Although it does not add the ability to edit individual facial featuresThe quality of the design makes up for it.

Horns of Faerûn
More horns for tieflings and other BG3 races
Another mod created by Nexus Mods user. AloiaHorns of Faerûn only adds a few new horn options, but they are much more complex than the default options available in BG3. It also allows characters to have horns without being tieflings, although this mod is not compatible with Dragonborn. In addition to providing additional capabilities to tieflings, horns are especially good for a druid character.
7
Eyes of the beholder
Significantly improves eye alignment
BG3 allows a bit of eye color choice and includes the ability to have heterochromia on Tav, but Eyes of the Beholder from laboratory assistant on Nexus Mods further expands the eye customization options. This mod adds glowing effects, more sclera color options, and even different pupil shapes to choose from. Wessnelle hair collection
Even more new hairstyles
Another hair mod that adds more features. Wessnell“Hair Collection” via Nexus Mods does not add as many hairstyles as Tawa’s Hair Salon. While this is a clothing mod and not part of character creation, the customization options it provides are worth mentioning since a character’s clothing is as much a part of their personality as any other part of them. New character creation presets (WIP)
Brand new character customization presets
Compared to the above mods, New Character Creation Presets WIP, another mod from Tori Nexus Mods adds most of the character presets with which you can start creating Tav. This mod adds dozens of male and female presets. And perhaps the most impressive achievement is that none of these presets are replacements, i.e. this mod will not change the appearance of any NPCs by replacing their preset designs with a replacement design that can then be used in Tav, since Tav can use Origin character presets. These presets are complete add-ons that stand on their own, and “WIP” in the name means that it is still being worked on, so even more options may be added in the future.
Baldur’s Gate 3 is a massive game that excels in many ways, from combat to storytelling. However, the character creation options for Tav and Dark Urge seem fairly basic, especially compared to other games that include incredibly extensive creation features. The modding community, however, has taken it upon itself to add more variety and options so that Tav can make his way across Faerûn in Baldur’s Gate 3.
