While Shameless follows the Gallagher family in all their schemes and misdeeds, the program also places great emphasis on the love lives of Frank’s children, especially all of Fiona Gallagher’s boyfriends. She had a knack for making reckless and impulsive decisions, which extended to her romantic partners. In the world of Shameless, Fiona’s boyfriends are often as reckless as she is. From Steve in Season 1 to Ford in Season 9, all of Fiona Gallagher’s love interests from Shameless seem to share some qualities.
Most of the time, it’s the same drive that the Gallaghers possess when it comes to making space for themselves in their cruel environment. Some are good people that Fiona wouldn’t mind settling down with, while others never intend to be more than a one-off. Some fit Fiona’s love interests, like Jimmy/Steve, who was problematic but also long-term.

Jasmine
A one-sided “romance”
Jasmine, played by Guest star Amy Smart was introduced as the PTA mom to Debbie’s class in season one, and the two struck up an easy friendship thanks to their mutual distaste for the other “less fun” moms in the group. It was quickly realized that Jasmine is much wittier and more affectionate than Fiona is, often inviting her to various parties and trying to set her up with eligible singles.
She also often kisses Fiona on the lips, suggesting early on that Jasmine may want something more than friendship. Jasmine’s behavior becomes more worrying as Shameless season 2 continues. She has several cases against her husband Hal, partying harder than ever. Things get worse when Jasmine is kicked out of the house by Hal and throws a party on the boat, inviting Fiona and her ex Steve.
There, Jasmine admits her feelings for her by kissing her, but it becomes clear that Fiona doesn’t reciprocate. Their friendship later ends when Fiona refuses to let her live in her house. Jasmine clearly had issues she needed to resolve before she could be a good lover to anyone.
11
Richard
The short-lived Sugar Daddy
Richard only appears in two episodes of the series, but ends up being one of Fiona’s worst lovers in Shameless. Richard is much richer than most of Fiona’s boyfriends and was introduced to her by Jasmine in Shameless 2nd season. Richard is a sugar daddy and Fiona remains completely convinced that he is not married and tells him that she doesn’t date married men.
Even so, she is enchanted by him, despite initially seeming completely uninterested, and the two go out for a short time. Fiona is ashamed of her socioeconomic status and lies to Richard that her house is Adam’s when she accompanies him to a fancy wedding. The entire episode has beautiful woman tones, as it is very clear that the rich man is fetishizing the girl who comes from nowhere.
Richard’s friend ends up making a play for her, and he is surprisingly understanding with her and they both have fun on the limo ride home. However, Fiona feels very uncomfortable in her sphere. He’s also married, so there was never a chance for her and Richard to work.
10
Robbie
One of Fiona’s worst decisions
All about Fiona’s relationship with Mike is toxicand it is an affair that Fiona keeps secret because it happens to her boyfriend’s brother. Not only does she not like him, she is almost afraid of him. She’s nervous around him for a reason and she knows their dates are wrong.
She feels bad about cheating on Mike, and even worse because her relationship with Robbie is purely physical. Of all Fiona’s lovers in ShamelessRobbie ends up being one of the most destructive and harmful in Fiona’s life. For his part, Robbie knows exactly what he’s doing with Fiona. He knows that she is seeing Mike and that he is ruining her relationship and her career.
Essentially, Robbie destroys everything she had going for her at that point in her life. He’s among the worst mistakes Fiona has ever made for this reason, and technically one of the main antagonists of Season 4. He runs away from Mike and his parents, claiming he could never accept the “boring” life of having a desk job. He finally reveals the affair to Mike, earning a well-deserved punch in the face.
9
Craig
A disappointing connection
Craig adds no value to Fiona’s life.
Craig uses Fiona’s high school crush on him to hook up with her, which is troubling on many levels. First, he cheats on his wife for a few moments with Fiona, but the way he uses her is also worrying. The episode in which your character is introduced see Fiona making several bad decisionsand staying with him when she expressly told V that she didn’t like married men is one of them.
Craig adds no value to Fiona’s life. In fact, he holds her and encourages her to keep distracting herself from her real problems. One of the most unpopular opinions about Fiona is that she is very focused on men, but this is a theory supported by her affair with Craig. He is also not a very caring person and compared to all of Fiona’s lovers in the Shamelesshe is not your best choice.
8
Tony
This would never work
Tony is one of the few South Side characters who displays solid morals and wouldn’t have been the worst choice of all of Fiona’s lovers in Shameless – if not for later revelations. Outside of his police duties, he is a kind, well-mannered, traditional person who tries to treat Fiona the best way he knows how.
Of course he falls in love with her after their one-night standbut unfortunately his romantic interest is not fully reciprocated. Despite his sweet demeanor and how much he endears himself to the public, Tony’s desires never align with Fiona’s.
Fiona is just looking for a casual relationship with him, while he wants to show her off to his mother and probably marry her in the future. Also, Later, Tony comes out as gaythen their relationship would never mean anything significant.
7
Gus
A relationship doomed from the start
At first, Gus seems like a good person who genuinely cares about Fiona. However, like almost all of Fiona’s lovers in Shameless, their relationship is doomed from the start and they marry too soon. Not only do they move very quickly and have one of Fiona’s wildest relationships Shamelessbut they don’t communicate very well and quickly become bitter towards each other.
If they had stopped to think about their relationship, things might have worked out. Gus is very different from Fiona, but she seems to like that about him. He is soft-spoken, calm and introspective, which grounds her. Their relationship could have been a great change of pace for both of them.
However, Gus reveals a more spiteful side of himself later when he sings an insulting song about her on stage in Shameless Season 6, which is all the audience needs to know that he and Fiona are not good for each other. However, Gus gets his in the end when he is forced to watch Sean propose with his grandmother’s pawned engagement ring.
6
Ford
A compulsive liar
Few viewers would say that Ford was the favorite of all of Fiona’s lovers in the Shameless. He He lies to her about his entire situation with his wife and doesn’t have much of the intrigue that Fiona’s other partners have. However, Ford is supportive of her rental property ventures and has supported her through some difficult times in the last two seasons of Emmy Rossum on Shameless.
He becomes a series regular in season 9, but the revelation that he has a wife and child he lied about is too much for their relationship to bear. When compared to Fiona’s other boyfriends, Ford is pretty forgettable. However, what’s not forgettable is how much he hurts Fiona.
Learning that he’s married — which is one of the show’s biggest secrets — is the final straw for Fiona, and she’s left spiraling. On one hand, he helps her grow and put herself first, but he’s also a total fraud. Debbie gets the better of Ford for hurting her sister when she and her friends hang him from a sign with his pants around his ankles and shoot him with a paintball gun.
5
Sean
The one Fiona almost married
For a while, Sean seems like the perfect match for Fiona of all Fiona’s lovers in Shameless. He has a troubled history, so he understands her upbringing more than anyone else Fiona has ever dated. His time with Fiona was interesting and helped make him one of the best characters to enter the series late, appearing in Shameless seasons 5, 6 and 8.
However, he is still struggling with addiction, which is getting in the way of his happiness. Between shared understanding, life goals, and chemistry, these two seem like a great match. Unfortunately, Sean doesn’t tell Fiona when he relapses. When Frank tells her the truth, Fiona knows she can never trust Sean again.
Before the fateful wedding day, Sean treats Fiona better than most of his other romantic partners. He tries to reconcile with her in season 8, revealing that he has been clean for a year, but when Fiona finds out that he has remarried his ex-wife and everything falls apart.
4
Adam
A good recovery
When it comes to rebounds, Adam isn’t Fiona’s worst choice and is one of the best in terms of all of Fiona’s lovers in the world. Shameless. Introduced in Season 2, Adam is caring and open-minded, and seems to make Fiona happy for the short time they are together, despite V believing Adam is just a dumber version of Jimmy.
They could have worked out in the long run if things hadn’t gotten complicated with Jimmy. Adam seems like a good person and his personality complements Fiona’s. The few scenes they share are lighthearted, happy, and trouble-free.
Unfortunately, things don’t last because Fiona isn’t really in love with him. When Jimmy finds a way back into her life, she comes back to him. Fiona’s connection to Jimmy doesn’t go unnoticed by Adam, and when the two decide to go on a double date with Jimmy and his wife Estefania, Adam notices their attraction and breaks up with her.
3
Steve
Interestingly, apparently the perfect combination
Initially, Fiona doesn’t think her relationship with Steve will be serious. However, he persists in making advances until Fiona accepts her feelings for him, and he turns out to be one of Fiona’s best lovers in the world. Shameless. That being said, Steve’s persistence is almost obsessive and if Fiona hadn’t been interested in him, it would have been highly problematic.
Still, Steve is the love interest who leaves the biggest impression. The two are very invested in each other, and Steve proves his commitment time and again by willingly involving himself in the Gallaghers’ lives and living in their run-down house. However, Steve’s downfall is his dishonesty, as his real name is James “Jimmy” Lishmanwhose wife is the daughter of a Brazilian drug dealer. He makes a living illegally while his wealthy family believes he is studying medicine in Shameless season 1.
Unfortunately, he ruins Fiona’s relationship with Adam when he admits his feelings for her on the double date. and the two end up kissing in the bathroom before she rejects him. Ultimately, it’s Jimmy’s lifestyle that gets in the way of the couple’s happily ever after, and frankly, Fiona deserves better despite everything he does for the Gallagher family.
2
Jimmy
The real Steve …the name change also came with a change in character.
Technically, Steve and Jimmy are the same person, but there is a clear difference in their behavior after Fiona discovers the truth about him.. When Jimmy reveals himself to be the son of wealthy parents and a medical school dropout, the Gallaghers wonder why he’s still hanging around the South Side. Technically, Jimmy is one of Fiona’s best lovers in the world. Shameless and the change of name also came with a change in its character.
From him devotion to Fiona can be seen as admirableespecially when he is teased for being something like a househusband. While Fiona takes care of her business, Jimmy takes care of Liam, takes care of the house and tries not to be killed by Estefania’s father. In short, Jimmy has too much going on to be fully present for Fiona, but he’s more thoughtful and thoughtful than Steve. The public always felt that Jimmy was gone very early.
1
Microphone
Fiona screwed up a lot
Mike embodies everything Fiona truly wants in her life – at least at the time she meets him, but he ends up being one of Fiona’s best lovers in the world. Shameless. After the whirlwind of her relationship with Jimmy, she needs some normalcy in her life, and Mike gives it to her.
He is also very kind and treats Fiona with the respect that many of her other boyfriends do not, and his character was a particular highlight of Shameless seasons 3 and 4. He starts as Fiona’s corporate boss when she works at the World Cup. It makes sense that Mike and Fiona wouldn’t last, no matter how good their relationship is; Mike is simply too ordinary for the life Fiona leads.
She craves adventure, which is why she is so attracted to Steve. But as a romantic partner, Mike is easily Fiona’s best. He could have provided her with a happy, stable, and secure life, and the two clearly liked each other. Instead, Fiona made the decision to have an affair with her brother, Robbie, which destroyed her future future.
Fiona ending up single was the right decision
Fiona never learned to love herself, much less allow anyone to show her love.
When Fiona Gallagher left Shamelessshe came out single, and that was the best decision she could have made. Fiona took on the parental role of her brothers and sisters when she was still a teenager. His mother was gone and his father was an absent father almost the entire time after that. Fiona had to be a mother when she should have been enjoying her transition into adulthood. As a result, she didn’t take enough self-care, and this carried over into her role as a girlfriend.
She was never able to figure things out and had terrible role models in her parents, so all of her boyfriends throughout the television series ranged from bad choices to toxic relationships. Fiona never learned to love herself, much less allow anyone to show her love. When she left Chicago, she ran away from her family and decided to start over somewhere else to become her own independent woman, She didn’t need a man to go with her. She needs to find herself before she can find love.
Finding a man, or even worse, a husband, and getting a happily ever after would have betrayed the entire character arc she enjoyed in Shameless. Fiona was never meant to live happily ever after, and her best bet was to have a hopeful ending, where there was hope that things could change as she escaped a life that showed no signs of improving in Chicago. Once she moves out, she can learn to take care of herself and only then can she meet her significant other.
Did Fiona have the most dysfunctional relationships on Shameless?
The mark of relationships in Shameless is that they are all dysfunctional.
Since some of Fiona’s storylines on Shameless revolve around how her romantic relationships can affect her family members, it makes perfect sense that audiences would be able to flesh out these relationships quite easily. Many of Fiona’s relationships were incredibly dysfunctional. She often had relationships with people who were obsessed with her, lied to her, and were already in relationships with other people. That doesn’t mean, however, that she had the most dysfunctional relationships in the series.
Most of the romantic relationships of all of the series’ older characters were dysfunctional. Lip, for example, was paid to stop dating someone, dated his own teacher, and even seduced a sexual predator when his sister and her friends were intent on exposing predators in their neighborhood. Lip has easily had as many dysfunctional relationships as Fiona.
Both Fiona and Lip learned most of what they knew about relationships from Frank, so it makes perfect sense that there would be so much dysfunction in their lives. Frank liked more fleeting relationships than most. He cared about one-night stands and physical compatibility rather than emotional compatibility. This is largely because his heart, for better or worse, belongs to the mother of his children, who comes into his life for a quick reconnection before returning again for years.
The mark of relationships in Shameless is that they are all dysfunctional. This is part of what makes the character dynamics so fascinating.
