I can’t believe the MCU introduced a huge part of Thanos’ origin story 5 years after his death at the end of the game

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Agatha All Along.

Marvel Television Agatha all the time recently introduced a wild character into the MCU who is pivotal to the development of Thanos’ backstory in Marvel Comics, five years after the Mad Titan’s death in Avengers: Endgame. I understand why Thanos’ origin story underwent significant changes when the intergalactic villain was adapted into the MCU, with his motivation for seeking the six Infinity Stones standing out to me as the most obvious change. I can’t believe that Marvel has now introduced the MCU to the original reason for Thanos’ quest in Marvel Comics.

We first saw Thanos in the post-credits scene of The Avengersalthough Josh Brolin took on the role of Guardians of the Galaxy on. 2018 Avengers: Infinity War explained his reasoning for seeking the Infinity Stones and wanting to eliminate half of all life in the universe, but left out one important detail this was fundamental to his history in Marvel Comics. Now, five years after Thanos’ defeat at the hands of Tony Stark’s Iron Man in Avengers: EndgameMarvel Studios established this important detail, but I realized it was completely disconnected from Thanos.

Thanos’ Infinity War story was changed for the MCU

Thanos wanted to bring balance to the universe in Avengers: Infinity War

The act of Thanos acquiring the six Infinity Stones, snapping his fingers and committing the genocide of half the population of the universe in an instant was taken directly from the pages of Marvel Comics. The Infinity Gauntlet 1991 event. However, I noticed some huge differences in this story, following Marvel Studios’ live-action adaptation.. In the comics, the heroes of Earth and other worlds only learn of Thanos’ mission after he snaps his fingers, and the snap is reversed shortly after it occurs, omitting the lasting effects that we are still exploring. in the MCU.

Another big change to Thanos’ Infinity Stone mission that I noticed was in his motivation. In the MCU, Thanos explained his suggestion of random genocide on Titan after realizing that the population was growing too fast for finite resources to keep up. He extended this idea throughout the universe, leading to Infinity War ending, which stands out to me as one of the most memorable moments in the MCU. In Marvel comics, Thanos wanted to commit this act to impress Lady Death, the personification of death herself.who he was in love with since she influenced him during his childhood.

Agatha All Along’s Death Reveal Introduces a Major Part of Thanos’ Comic History Following His Death in the MCU

Aubrey Plaza’s MCU Character Connects to Marvel Comics’ Thanos

Now, five years after Thanos’ death in Avengers: EndgameI’m thrilled that Lady Death has finally been introduced to the MCU. Aubrey Plaza made her debut as Green Witch Rio Vidal in Agatha all the time, WandaVision first spinoff series, and the fact that she has no Marvel Comics counterpart has sparked big theories about who she could be playing. I loved seeing theories about her being the MCU’s representation of Lady Death, and I was shocked and excited when Agatha all the time episode 7, ‘Death’s Hand in Mine’, finally confirmed that Aubrey Plaza is indeed playing Lady Death.

Talking to Inverse in October 2024, Agatha all the time creator Jac Schaeffer unfortunately confirmed that Thanos would not appear in the series, and his connection to Lady Death in Marvel Comics would not be addressed. Thanos’ mission to collect the Infinity Stones and wipe out half the universe’s population in the MCU featured no mention of Lady Death, and Agatha all the time I haven’t seen Death mention Thanos yetso I suppose the pair are simply not linked. While some may find this disappointing, I think this plot change makes a lot more sense for the MCU.

Why the MCU introduced its version of death so long after the end of the Thanos movie

Lady Death appears to have no connection to Thanos in the MCU

Thanos turning to dust at the end of Avengers: Endgame

Lady Death is one of the strangest and most complex characters in Marvel Comics, so I think it would have been very strange for Marvel Studios to introduce Death during the Infinity Saga. Wilder Multiverse Saga projects such as Loki, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Thor: Love and Thunder have established significant cosmic beings in the MCU, so it seemed like a natural progression for Death to now make himself known. Thanos’ most grounded mission in Infinity War it made more sense to me and had a greater impact as it related to something easier to believe, like the fear of overpopulation.

It has also been of great benefit to Agatha all the time that Lady Death plays such an important role in the series and in the backstory of Kathryn Hahn’s own Agatha Harkness. Agatha has claimed hundreds, if not thousands, of lives throughout her long history, which has led her to become involved in a romantic relationship with Death as a consequence.. It shows us the more human qualities of Agatha Harkness and Death, which makes us more invested in these two formidable characters, but also strangely more terrified of them, and I think that’s the perfect balance.
