The next 9-1-1 the spinoff may have already found its location according to a new report. From co-creators Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Tim Minear, the growing small-screen franchise began in 2018 with its main installment based in Los Angeles. Starting at Fox, 9-1-1 moved to ABC after its original network pulled the plug. That being said, its spinoff, 9-1-1 Lone Star continues on Fox and will end its execution there after the current year. Admittedly, the cancellation remains divisive, but there is a silver lining to it, as its end means the beginning of a new offshoot.
In a new report from Deadlineciting anonymous sources, the next 9-1-1 portion of the franchise will be in Hawaii. Other states were considered to follow Los Angeles and Austin as the location for the next development. Apparently Las Vegas was the favorite. More recently, however, the project’s creators are now more interested in establishing their next set of police procedures in 9-1-1 franchise in Hawaii. Despite this, however, the outlet notes some challenges for this to officially move forward, which includes the island being an expensive state to film in. ABC and studio 20th Television declined to comment.
Why a 9-1-1 Hawaii spinoff is exciting but also risky
Hawaii is an expensive filming location
Hawaii has been a popular TV procedural locationwith programs like Gilligan’s Island, both Hawaii Five-0sand Magnum PI like this Lostusing the paradise island as a backdrop. That said, establishing production in Hawaii comes at a high cost. CBS just canceled NCIS: Hawaii after just three seasons and a major cliffhanger, reportedly due to cost-cutting. It is worth noting that the youngest contemporary NCIS the spinoff was doing great numbers, being the 12th most-watched non-sports program of the last TV cycle. Even with this performance, the network was forced to shut it down.
Currently, Fox has the only network TV show set in Hawaii – Hi-Surf Rescue. Produced by John Wells Productions, Fox Entertainment and Warner Bros. Television, is a bit similar to Baywatch in premise. Based on other 9-1-1 shows, however, it’s assumed that the upcoming spinoff will expand to just responding to accidents and mix-ups on the beach, but also responding to various emergencies across the island. This would allow you to showcase the rest of Hawaii’s beauty.
Our Take on a Hawaiian 9-1-1 Spinoff
The cost of production can determine the future of the split
Ultimately, a 9-1-1 spinoff set in Hawaii is exciting. It is also accessible from Bobby and Athena in the main ship series, leading to crossovers. That said, I wonder how sustainable this can be, considering the cost of producing shows filmed on the island. Canceling 9-1-1: Lone Star after the 5th season had already received backlash from fans who invested in its narrative. Perhaps it would be better if the people behind the new branch focused on its long-term viability. While it’s important to find the perfect setting for a show, viewers will come if it has good stories.
