Marshall Lawson and Sharnie stumble upon skulls in Lawson’s land in Territory season 1, setting up a future narrative and a mystery to solve. Netflix’s neo-Western series introduces audiences to the Lawson family, a cattle dynasty that has owned the largest cattle ranch in the world for generations. Although they can serve as protagonists of the series the Lawsons have a long history of violence that is coming back to haunt themand much of the series is about how that history is reflected in the current generation.
Marshall Lawson is played by Sam Corlett in the Territory cast, representing the newest generation of Lawsons. Although he was raised at Marianne Station, at the beginning of the TV series he is shown to be an outsider in his family, running away with friends and having almost no interest in the family business. In episode 4, Marshall and Sharnie are finally alone, away from Rich, when They make a gruesome discovery on Lawson’s land: a family of skeletons left in a cave.
Human skulls are thought to be a family of Aborigines killed by Colin Lawson’s ancestors
Colin claims he only saw it once
At the moment we can only speculate on the exact nature of the family’s death, but Colin Lawson claims it was done by his ancestors and something he has only seen once in his life. Due to the music queue, which plays in other parts of the Territory soundtrack, it is implied that the bones belonged to an Aboriginal family, connecting them to the show’s thematic examination of land and the cultural divide between the Lawsons and the indigenous community. However, given his place on the show, there could be more to this story.
In that environment, it’s not impossible that the bones could have survived for generations, but it’s a little suspicious that Colin knew exactly what Marshall was talking about. If Colin had seen those bones sooner, he might have buried them. Whether Colin was directly involved or not, It seems clear there is a violent history with the Lawsons that he doesn’t want discovered.. This can also connect to the small safe in Territory end.
What the skulls found mean for the Lawsons in the territory, season two
The Lawsons’ enemies can use this against them
The Lawsons already have a number of problems on their hands, and the skulls may not pose an immediate threat unless Sharnie decides to bring the matter to someone’s attention. However, in the situation in which this was revealed, it could cause conflict with the indigenous communitywho will probably already be upset and suspicious of the Lawsons after the incident at the end of Territory season 1. With Marianne Station’s leadership in question, the Lawsons’ enemies will take every opportunity they can to destroy their image.
A power struggle erupts after the death of the Lawson family patriarch, leaving his massive cattle ranch without a clear successor. Rival factions, from cattle barons and indigenous elders to billionaires and gangsters, vie for control. Tensions rise as the once-dominant Lawson family faces betrayal from forces within and without.
