Warning: This article contains spoilers for Superman & Lois Season 4, Episode 5.
Superman and Lois Season 4, Episode 5 takes the final chapter of the DC show’s story in some interesting directions as it moves into the latter half of its final season. Superman and Lois Season 4, Episode 4 officially brought the Man of Steel back from the dead and into history once again, but his return caused Lex Luthor to appear again in Smallville. However, Lex’s story in this part of the series takes a major turn from his usual MO, as a result of which his daughter also finally appears in the show.
While the live-action Superman show primarily focuses on Lex Luthor’s story here, the release also offers some important events for each member of the Kent family. This is especially true because more than one character seems to have learned the family’s superhero secrets. As the official halfway mark of the final season, there’s a lot set up by the series so far that seems to pave the way for a truly satisfying conclusion for everyone. Superman and Lois season 4 cast – and episode 5 just cements that idea once again.
Lex Luthor reunites with his daughter – but not for long
Lex Luthor meets Elizabeth once again
Superman and Lois Season 4, Episode 5 mainly revolves around providing a more detailed look into Lex Luthor’s life and what led him to this point – with the episode detailing the abuse he was subjected to as a child, his terse marriage and divorce and Luthor’s time with his daughter Elizabeth before he was arrested. In the present day, however, Clark and Lois decide to try to reunite Lex and Elizabeth, believing this may be the only way to protect the Kent family from Luthor trying to destroy them once again.
As Elizabeth and Lex reminisce about their past and genuinely reconnect – especially over Elizabeth’s pregnancy, which her father had no idea about due to lack of contact – Elizabeth demands that Lex leave Lois and the Kents alone so she can welcome him back into her life. and start again. Despite everything, Lex refuses to let his grudge go, resulting in his daughter abandoning him and exemplifying his commitment to destroying Lois and Clark’s lives.
Jonathan’s new powers almost ruin their relationship
Jonathan Kent is facing the trials of using his superpowers
With Jordan taking a step back from using his powers, Jonathan takes responsibility in episode 5, taking Lois to find Elizabeth and becoming more involved in the shenanigans of this chapter of the story. Unfortunately for him, this increasing set of responsibilities coincides with his girlfriend Candice’s return to Smallville to see him, leading to tensions between the two when he has to keep disappearing and then lie about where he’s been.
This comes to a head at the end of episode 5, with Candice believing that Jonathan simply didn’t want her to visit her, as she knows he’s been lying to her this whole time and can’t think of any other explanation for it. However, Jordan gives Candice a clue – presumably remembering how he had a similar situation with his now ex-girlfriend Sarah – which causes Candice to reunite with Jonathan as a result.
It’s important to note that Candice doesn’t specifically say that she knows Clark is Superman and that the brothers have powers, but she alludes to this and says Jordan told her “all“, then probably Candice knows the full extent of the Kent family’s secrets. Interestingly, this would make Candice the second character in the episode to be revealed to know this information, as one of the brothers’ friends also casually references the fact that she discovered that Clark is Superman.
Superman relives his death
Superman comes to terms with his odds against Doomsday
Superman’s return in Superman and Lois season 4 – and specifically his negative reaction to forcing himself to fly in episode 4 – suggested that he wouldn’t be able to beat Doomsday if the two faced off again, given that he lost the first time and currently appears less powerful than he was in their initial battle. Episode 5 ensures that this would be the case, with Superman revisiting his fight through a simulation in the Fortress of Solitudewhich leads the Man of Steel himself to confirm that he would only lose again if they fought now.
This makes things more interesting in terms of how the show will deal with Doomsday, as it currently doesn’t seem like it will be a simple case of Clark learning from his original fight and applying it in a rematch to defeat the Bizarro mutant. However, the episode opens up a new way for Doomsday to be called off as a threat – albeit the exact opposite of a physical confrontation.
Lois Lane May Have Beaten Doomsday Through Her Bizarro Connection
Doomsday may not need to be defeated in battle
Perhaps the most surprising part Superman and Lois season 4, episode 5 gets to some of its later scenes, in which Lois Lane summons Doomsday to speak with him. Lois realizes that Doomsday is being summoned by a version of the ELT that she uses to warn Clark and the boys about the need for their help, and seems to register that this means an element of Bizarro’s time, as her own world’s Superman is still exists within Doomsday.
As such, Lois uses the machine to summon Doomsday and – relying on the fact that he seemed to recognize her and that he was also in love with his universe’s version of Lois – begs him to remember who he is and leave his family at peace.. This appears to have potentially resonated with the remaining humanity within Doomsday, who then flies away. The final scenes of Superman and Lois Season 4, Episode 5 shows that Doomsday appears not to have returned to Lex’s base when he disappeared, making this particular story especially interesting.
While it’s unlikely this will be the last time audiences will see Doomsday in Superman and Loisis a fascinating way to explore more about this version of the character, as it explains and justifies why the series chose to transform Bizarro into another iconic DC villain. Likewise, having the series’ protagonists be able to overcome the threat of Doomsday by appealing to whatever hero traits they still have left in them would be a powerful way to conclude their villain arc, even if there’s still a good chance of at least one other fight. with him being left in the series.
