This Gen 5 Pokemon has a horrifying lore reason for being near hospitals

One unexpectedly dark Pokemon Likes to haunt hospitals, but not for the reasons you’d expect. Almost every Ghost-type Pokemon has a tragic past or backstory, but there are some that are truly terrifying. One such Pokemon is Lampent, the middle evolution in the Chandelure line. Lampent is a Ghost/Fire-type Pokemon that first appeared in Pokemon Black and Pokemon White Along with his cute pre-evolved form Litwick and the unexpectedly popular Chandelure. However, although the evolutionary line seems to resemble animated light fixtures, The Pokemon keep a dark secret.

Lampent doesn’t seem like an evil Pokemon based on its oil lamp-like appearance, however It is part of a line that actually consumes the souls of the deceased. Unlike other Ghost-type Pokémon that interact with human spirits in some way, Lampent hunts down the dying and cannot help their souls move on to the afterlife, instead using those souls as fuel for its fire. What’s more, Lampent’s behavior is well known in the Pokemon world, to the point that the Pokédex refers to it as a messenger of death.

Lampent’s Pokédex entry is pure nightmare fuel

Lampent hangs near hospitals to be close to the dying, but with an evil purpose

According to Lampent’s position in Pokemon Whites pokedex, “It comes near the moment of death and steals spirit from the bodyThis is similar to Litwick, which absorbs the life force of humans it encounters to keep its flame burning, but Lampent seems to actively seek out the dying. Being near places of death Lampent is also naturally attracted to the near-death, as other Pokédex entries note that Lampent quietly begins to stalk those it discovers are close to death.

To be fair, there are many others Ghost-type Pokemon like Graveard That dash away from the living force, but Lampent actively uses the souls that they absorb as fuel for its fire. While Lampent’s Pokédex entries do not mention what happens to the souls it burns, Chandelure’s Pokédex entry may provide a disturbing hint. Pokemon Black 2 and Pokemon White 2s Pokédex entry notes that “The ghosts burned [Chandelure’s] A malicious flame loses its way and wanders the world forever.” So, it seems that Lampent and Chandler can steal the souls of the dead and then doom them from passing.

What makes Lampent’s lore so horrifying

Lampent’s Pokédex entries make the Pokemon sound like a predator of the dying.

Based on Lampent’s various Pokédex entries, it appears that Lampent actively seeks out dying humans and even heads to hospitals in search of people close to death. When people pass away, Lampent then absorbs their souls and burns them with bifal fire. Assuming that lampent’s flames work similarly to chandeliers, The souls it burns are then prevented from passing on to the afterlife Either reincarnating or moving on to whatever fate the Pokemon world typically has in store for people.

Lampent’s description makes it look like a grim reaper, an apex predator of human souls who actively torments the dying and then damns them once they pass for good measure. It’s no wonder that Lampent is called a Messenger of Death by the PokédexAs people know they are not only destined to die if they encounter a lampent, they are also about to become fuel for its terrible fire. This is what makes Lampent one of the most terrifying Pokemon ever, an impressive feat given the Pokemon Franchise’s love of spooky stories and dark lore.
